    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    GLASSWYNE.

Rain drizzled down across the field in ocean-like waves, lazily observed by the pinto maiden. She'd waited through much of the night and most of the morning for a break in the clouds so she too could make a spectacular debut like the millions of other souls that had passed through these hallowed grounds, but her patience had grown thin. Altogether it was not an unpleasant kind of rain, falling lightly on her back and stirring up the freshness of the ground itself, but it was a bit hard to appear the slightest bit desirable when one was so rain soaked that her whites took on the pink hue of the skin beneath.

Exhaling slowly, breathing fog into the  chilled air, she  moved forward, pale eyes alert. She didn't expect to be approached by many, she was pretty but not exceptional, but she did want to find a home of her own before the sun set on her third birthday. As far as she was concerned, it was simply a blessing to be out on her own, making her own decisions.

At two years old, Raene is still very much an adolescent, gawky and physically unsure of herself. That she has inherited her father's height is no help and her sleek but feathered legs are as likely to trip her up as to carry her forward. Still, despite the fact that she is often covered in more than the usual number of bumps and bruises, the appaloosa-spotted filly manages to have at least some semblance of looking put together.

Most of that is due to the fact that she has Grandmother Nativity's color-changing, and the hues that she paints on her naturally black and white are eye-catching enough to distract from her clumsiness. Today she is still mostly her spotted blanket black self, but her mane and tail are the same salmon-pink as her mother's. A handful of her black spots are the same bright chestnut as her father's copper coat, and her eyes are as yellow as the back of a goldfinch.

The rain has washed off most of the mud from her most recent fall, so Raene feels that perhaps she's suitable enough for company. The nearest horse is a paint mare with lonely coloring of her own, and the filly moves forward to greet her with a warm and genuine smile. "Hello there," she says, her voice a tad too enthusiastic for a day as dreary as this one. "I'm Raene. What's your name?"

    GLASSWYNE.

Although her imagination had been working overtime guessing what creatures would approach, she hadn't considered anything quite so fantastic looking as the young mare that approached her. Both black trimmed ears flick forward in a brief expression of surprise, a grin spreading easily across her charcoal lips. Glass had heard plenty of stories of horses painted in fantastic colors or even sporting wings and magic powers, but had never seen such things herself. She imagined that eventually the sight of a mare with a pink mane and rich yellow eyes would soon seem commonplace, but for now she reveled in the new-ness of it all.

"Pretty name. I'm Glasswyne," another quick steal of sunshine across her lips. "Or Wynn if you prefer."

Glass paused here, not immediately sure how to proceed. Were you supposed to wait and go through some idle chit-chat first or was it acceptable to delve right into the meat of the situation? Was it socially acceptable to ask about the veritable rainbow this mare was? Briefly her brow furrowed with this concern as much as an equine's brow could furrow before it smoothed as she made her decision. "Where do you come from Raene?."

The other female's easy smile puts the last of Raene's fears at ease, and the young horse grins happily. For all her apparent confidence, this is the first time that the black filly has spoken to anyone that is not a resident of the Falls and she'd be just a little terrified. But this stranger - Wynn, she reminds herself - seems very nice and not at all scary.

"I'm from the Falls," she replies, "it's a kingdom and it's very nice". Mother had reminded her what to say, but it's rather hard to remember everything. "I'm here to see if you would like to join my home." She remembers that much at least!

Raene has been asking to be allowed to go to the Feild for months now. Mother and Father have always said that she is too young, but finally they had relented. Perhaps it is because Raene is finally mature enough, but more likely it is because Mother is exhausted by the birth of Raene's little sister and Father was tired of saying 'no' a dozen times a day. Whatever the reason Raene, who is rather plain in terms of Beqanna's magical gifts even with her pink hair, has finally gotten to come.
