    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

Oh, What Fickle Flame... [Smother, Any]
    #1

He’d just gotten back and already he needed time to clear his thoughts. Tiberios was getting physically sick of living in the confines of the Dale. What had once been a home and source of joy was now worse than the prison he’d been confined to during his captivity. Perhaps it wasn’t best to return to the meadow fresh out of jail, (it’d been the start of his problems) but he’d quit fearing things like death or torture some time ago. The indifference to just about everything is as plain as the giant burn scar that stretches across the left side of his body. The ugly, angry mark gathers curious stares but Tiberios had long ago learned to blur them out. What were they compared to the gift he’d been given for such a mark? They’d all gladly wear the same skin if they could wield what he possessed.

As if his thoughts had taken over, the familiar blue-and-white flame dances along his front legs - winding and gathering strength before spilling over his chest and giving him a flaming breastplate. The scorching blaze is brilliantly hot, and Tiberios welcomes it like a long-lost friend. Content with his new look he passes the rest by until there comes an area unpopulated. Here is where he makes his mark, letting the fire billow out from all four hooves to burn a perfectly medium circle in the earth. No vegetation or life remains. Only the hardened, melted crust of ruined dirt. He smiles at his work, lets the fire ring itself around his neck like a flickering chain, and turns his attention back to the throng, wondering if company would come his way.

    somebody make me feel alive

The day is warm and the sun bright, inviting the silver queen to take a step back from her lofty throne and enjoy the fleeting summer. Like a doe she descends gracefully from the top of the waterfall. The queen had been spending a lot of her free time gazing out over the lands she now controlled thinking about the political actions of the few monarchs she had seen rule, but today was not a day for serious musings.

With a song tickling her lips and a sense of freedom in her heart she left the Falls borders for the day. She felt almost criminal leaving her post but it was stressful attempting to rule a kingdom and Shatter needed a day to herself. The recent return of her daughter had brought forth a lot of questions and in honesty she just wanted an escape for a little bit. No kingdom or responsibilities for one day.

She finds her hooves carrying her down a familiar path as she makes her way towards the meadow. Not much has changed here, it never does. She pauses to say hello to familiar faces and takes a brief walk down memory lane when she sees him. Wreathed in flame and standing proud, she blinks rapidly to make sure he’s still there, still real. Shatter hadn’t seen or heard from Tiberios since their daughter was born and seeing him now, even after the time that had passed still sent her heart aflutter. He bore some new scars and seemed angrier than she had ever seen him. It made her ache to see him like this. Not knowing if he would even want to see her, she conjures up her liquid outer shell and approaches.

“Howdy stranger” she calls out jovially. The same words that had started their twisted relationship but with a touch of sorrow, of yearning lacing them. “You’re looking a little different, did you do something with your hooves?” She repeats the joke smiling at him, desperately hoping he remembers.

It’s a sound he hasn’t heard in a long time. Light, as if nothing could weigh it down. Not even the immense suffering he’d dealt to her. He was surprised she could even bring herself to talk to him. He doesn’t betray his true self to her, she deserved more than that, so when he turns to face her the broken smile relays exactly how much he’s missed her. She would always be the water to his fire - the calm to his rage. It hurts him when he catches a glimpse of the silvery exoskeleton, (almost invisible, were it not for the glint of the midday sun) that she would be afraid of him. He could never hurt her. She was the mother of his child - his only child, and she was more precious to him than she could ever know.

Her greeting issues a rumble of appreciative laughter from his gut. She’d grown well, as he had. They were older together. Wiser. But he cannot escape the edge to her voice. It reminds him of how he failed her, time and time again. Tiberios had never deserved her love. “Just a little worse for wear. The usual.” He steps free of his dead circle, extending his nose to her gently so that she could accept the gesture if she so wished. He wouldn’t blame her if she refused. “I heard a rumor some time ago that you were now a queen. Would I be correct?”

The Falls could do no better. Shatter had remained steadfast in her duty since the day she’d set foot on that neutral soil. She’d been the rally cry when all others had given up hope. A beacon of light in the darkness. Tiberios was more than proud of her. “I’ve missed you.” he says finally, because it’s true. He wonders if she’s moved on - taken another lover, given life to more beautiful children.

The laughter that rumbles from his chest brings her smile full force to her lips. It lights up her face and coaxes forth a small chuckle of her own. For all the scars and flame, Tiberios looks good. There is an edge to him that never used to be there and more cynicism, but he wears it all with a haughty pride. She has always admired that about him. Even when he was at his lowest he still managed to fight back yelling Is that all you’ve got? When he steps towards her she can’t help lowering her watery armor and stepping up, brushing his nose lightly with hers before sliding forward wrapping her neck over the top of his, keeping the armor up over her chest where is chain would brush her skin. She feels the water boil and relishes the heat against her skin. With concentration she manages to replace it with cool water so the contact doesn’t cause permanent damage. She holds the embrace fiercely before taking a step back and dropping her armor altogether. She hadn’t practiced that control in some time and it had drained her fighting against his flames, but oh it was worth it. The brief contact brought everything she had tried to smother in her heart to the surface. No matter what happened between them he would always have all of her love.

She smiles sheepishly when he brings up her queenship. It still didn’t feel real but she was trying her best. “The rumors are true, Natilyn left and there was a hole that needed to be filled.” Shatter shrugs her shoulders. The crown meant little compared to the wellbeing of the kingdom. It was simply a means to an end. “I took over the year after Tyrna was born, we had a drought and the waterfall dried up. That was when things all started to fall apart but we managed.” She watches him carefully still afraid he will disappear. His last statement catches her off guard and she has to swallow down the rise of emotion it causes. “I’ve missed you too.” She is still unsure of where they stand exactly but she knows without doubt there will never be anyone else for her. “Things haven’t been the same without you around.” She smiles sheepishly once more before growing somber and gesturing to the new scars along his side. “What happened to you?”
