— i would rather learn what it feels like to burn than feel nothing at all —
In the dark gray of a dying winter, fire moves.
Eternally burning, the embers of her mane and the flames of her skin, steam rising from her steps from where her hooves meet the cold snow, she has no destination in mind.
Sparks trail behind her, bright but harmless, flickers in the dark that one could follow if any cared at all where she was going.
No one would be following her, of course. She has made sure of that. While others built their walls of stone, hers have always been made of fire. An untamable, unforgiving thing that she never asked for and never could harness. She burned even those whose touch she might have welcomed, and pushed away those that could have withstood the heat. It did not matter that if you were to peel back the layers—and by this point there were so many, all of them charred and now long-cold—you would find that she craved some kind of companionship, because fire aside she has always been a stubborn girl and the one she wanted was one she could not have.
Perhaps that is why she climbs the mountain range that separates the Dale from the meadow. Perhaps that is why she pushes herself further and further into the snow drifts, remembering how it had seemed as though the universe had been playing a cruel joke for him to come back covered in ice.
Through the white noise of her thoughts she had stopped paying attention to where she walked, her breath pluming before her like curls of smoke. Although the snow at this elevation still appeared to be plentiful, it did not change the fact that spring was approaching, and that the subtle temperature shifts were causing the snow to melt. Where once a bridge of snow across a mountain stream would have held her weight, now was not the case.
She did not even have the chance to process why she heard the muffled sound of water underfoot, before the ground seemed to drop from beneath her.
She doesn’t feel the cold, not right away. That scalding heat that has lived within her seems to repel the icy water away at first as her body plunges into it. But she cannot find purchase, cannot fight her way back above the combination of water and collapsed snow, and as the cold leaches now into her muscles, into her bones, it is her lungs turn to burn.
Eventually, everything goes dark.
