    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    Matilda
The year-old fillies are allowed to explore outside of Tephra, though they often have company when they do. Whether in equine or canine form, though usually the former - since the wolves that often flock to Matilda and her father can be controlled but not communicated with and that makes them only sort of any good at babysitting.

Both of their parents had chosen to come with them this morning, and Matilda is amused by her dad’s obvious attempts to be subtle about not watching them too closely.

There is a feeling of safety, even outside of their home, that gives this soft-purple girl a strong sense of security. She believes with all of her heart that even if they were to wander a little too far, even if they were to get into some trouble, their parents would be right there to help them.

It is this feeling that inspires her to not linger too close to their parents on this warm spring day. The forest expands farther than she can see and it is under her skin, encouraging her to wander its depths. Where the shadows outnumber the dappled spots of sunlight and the air is thick with the lush scents of plants. If there are shadowy places further in, if there are dangerous corners she should not want to go, Matilda does not think of them. Her mind is filled with sunlit paths and the kaleidoscope of flowering trees and bushes that come with this season.

And, of course, she does not want to explore the winding treks on her own. Matilda seeks out her twin and immediately tugs softly on a soft periwinkle feather in those wings she's trying not to be too jealous of. She hasn't yet realized that she could shift a pair of her own - she hasn't shifted at all since the day of her birth, and she isn't sure she believes the stories that she had been born a lilac-coloured pup (or that her dad and his siblings had been wolf pups as well).

“Come on, Mea. Let’s go a little further in.”

There is already a spring to her step and she will not be denied, not for this. Not even if they end up having a cub and a blue wolf tail them not-so-secretly. She won't mind one bit so long as she gets to see something new today, discover something that doesn't exist in their tropical home. Just the anticipation of the chance of that happening, of focusing her turquoise eyes on whatever these woods have to offer, is enough to make her bubble with excitement. Her smile radiates as she waits for her twin's approval before leading the way down the path she's already picked out, some sweet scent coming from this direction.

It seems as good of a reason as any to go one way over the other - they might as well enjoy this as much as possible.

Not that there had really been any unenjoyable days in her life so far. Still, that didn't mean she couldn't strive to have another shining one.

When the gentle scent seems to grow the further they follow this path, Matilda's curiosity finally cannot be contained simply in her mind and she asks Meadow - "What do you think that smell is?" Forgetting, for the moment, that her twin has much the same experience with everything as she does. It's Matilda's instinct to think that someone else, whoever she is with really, has the answers to her questions. Even if that someone happened to be a few minutes younger than her.
