    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

Helka only knew a world of darkness. She was not unsettled by the dark or wary of what lurked in the shadows because these things simply were.  She hadn’t met many other children, having spent most of the time lingering in her mother’s shadow or with one of her other strange companions. She knew her mother was curious of the monsters who lurked in the darkness. She was hesitant to say her mother was afraid of them – but it was clear that the monsters had abilities that were outside the scope of Beqanna’s magic.

Her mother’s reservations about the monsters weren’t enough to quell the little wendigo’s curiosity.  And perhaps just a hint the need to rebel in some way – to go see the world on her own terms even though so far the world she knew wasn’t exactly a pleasant one.  Her first memories were of her stillborn sister – her ever-present companion who had so curiously never dreamed in the womb.  She’d been immune to Helka’s nightmares. It was only upon her first breath that she’d understood that her sister had never really been hers to have in the first place.  Since then she’s known only a world colored by darkness and all things strange.

And she is a strange thing to stumble upon in the middle of summer, blanketed in frost like her father and looking like something hewn from solid ice.  However, the strangeness doesn’t end there. Even in the dark it is evident that she is different. Even in her youth her body is skeletal, but strong.  Tiny spikes of antlers are obvious, though the black antlers are covered in a thicker layer of frost than her body.

She shivers as she stares out across the meadow – not because of the frost that seeps into her skin – but out of anticipation for all the things unknown hiding here, in plain sight.
