    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

The light that meets the dark

Someday, Cheri will look back on these childhood memories and marvel at the way her adulthood tendencies revealed themselves so early on.
For instance, she drew back and let Reave take the natural lead. His legs were as adept as any pair at making short work of the uneven terrain, and Cheri (a native-born herself) saw no reason to upset this balance of lead-and-follow in the midst of their adventure. Following felt as natural as rain to her, as normal and expected as the sun rising or falling (Hah!) Which Cheri supposed came from being born a twin. There was always some other horse to follow and lead her to new places; if she held constant as the north star and remained true to her nature, then her childish fantasy expected the universe to produce an honorable, good sort of horse that would always lead her in the right direction.

Reave is a wonderful guide to follow.

He takes them nimbly through the forest, a Robin hood-esque character knowing these woods like the underside of his own hooves, all but missing a band of merry stallions to keep them company. Cheri thinks of herself as a young mare-maiden Marian, haphazardly inserting herself into precarious situations for the love of a childhood friend. In reality, her own legs are still trying to figure themselves out, because she’s a growing filly and she’ll be tall someday. Slender, waif-like and tall to be exact; for now her hooves stumble over themselves or miss their intended mark, but she keeps up as best she can.

For two young horses out on their own, Cheri and Reave are more capable than they’re given credit for. They’ve wandered far from their original meeting place, farther still from Cheri’s father and her siblings, but fear doesn’t find itself out here in the unknown. They’ve outrun the beast. Cheri is only impishly happy, bouncing her way down to a trot and then finally stopping for a look when Reave bumped her. She was breathless; wild locks of her green hair stood straight up from her forehead, blown back by the wind. Her legs were splayed apart from each other in a square sort of stance and she huffed, eyes sparkling, at Reave’s question.

“Never.” Cheri shook her head, ears flopping. She’d hardly noticed how the trees had thinned and shrunk, turning into evergreen cousins of the redwoods she’d always been so familiar with. Now they stood far apart from one another, revealing the mystery of the world beyond her safe home. “Is that Loess or Tephra?” She asked Reave, turning a face full of expectant wonder towards him.

Had he been there before? Past the borders?
