    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

I'm assuming this is a challenge from Gryffen as a herd stallion who happens to be living in the Chamber, since kingdoms cannot challenge herds ;]

    Kreios's Stats:
    Age 7-8
    Percheron Hybrid
    Height is 18hh
    few spot chestnut appaloosa

    kreios

don't you tame your demons, but always keep them on a leash

Keeping one wary green eye on Gryffen, Kreios makes his way to the western edge of the red clay battlegrounds. The late afternoon sun is warm on his pale back, and the stallion turns to face the Chamberling with a scowl tarnishing his otherwise handsome face. His shadow reaches nearly to his opponent, who looks rather small with the distance of twenty yards between them. Of course, he is small to Kreios - more than a foot shorter at the withers than the chestnut stallion and with a slimmer build as well. Kreios is no small horse, having inherited most of his sire’s height and bulk, trimmed by his dam’s more baroque build, and full of endurance and strength resulting from daily journeys from the Orange Country to the Desert and the practice required from his as a member of the kingdom’s Army.

Kreios’ reputation might be that of an affable and soft-spoken herd stallion, but he is just as driven to protect his family as his parents had been to protect their kingdoms. Gryffen has made the mistake of toying with a gentle giant who is surprisingly not entirely gentle when the safety of the mother of his child is threatened.

The scowl on Kreios’ face remains in place as he begins the battle, and it is likely to remain there until he returns, victorious, to his family in Orange Country.

He goes from a standstill to a canter as quickly as he can, rushing towards the smaller cremello stallion with the knowledge that to face him means staring into the sun at his back. Gryffen could turn easily avert his eyes from the brightness, of course, but then he’d have to rely on his other senses to tell him where Kreios was, and smell and sound can only do so much to help determine an enemy’s target. The red and white stallion isn’t making any effort at subtlety though, rushing as he is towards the other horse with a long stride and pinned ears.

His general target is the front right of Gryffen’s body, and so he angles himself slightly to his own left to avoid crashing head on into the other stallion. Kreios slows his pace only enough to be sure that he can maintain his balance as he rears and lashes out with his front hooves at Gryffen’s lower right shoulder. Due to the inequity in height and his somewhat lower target, Kreios doesn’t have to rear as high as he would on a horse of his own size, which keeps his center of gravity lower. He intends to use the other stallion to stop his forward momentum, and as such the majority of the intended twenty degree angle impact is likely to come mostly from Kreios’ right hoof and land squarely on Gryffen’s side. His left hoof is less likely to cause damage from this angle, but with a trajectory toward the lower part of Gryffen’s first few ribs it is no small thing either. The impact itself should be enough to knock the cremello off balance, and the force behind the hoof of thousand plus pound stallion could leave a very nasty bruise, if not more seriously muscle damage.

The weight difference between the two stallions is likely to be at least several hundred pounds, and Kreios is doubtful that his opponent is skilled enough to counteract basic physics. Any attempted shoving match would surely end with Kreios as the winner. That is not to say that Gryffen is otherwise defenseless, but Kreios certainly hopes he is. The freckled stallion stays close to the other horse even as his front hooves land on the red clay, knowing that nearness means less of a chance to build momentum in attacks.

Oh dear, someone’s mad. The Chamber ghost cares nothing for this stallion, doesn’t even know the guy. He simply saw something he liked and took a chance to take it. If this failed, he would find another way. Gryffen was nothing if not determined. He regards the larger male with some amusement, seeing just how pissed off he was with that scowl on his stupid face. Yes, Kreios was bigger and larger than him but his weight would slow him down and that’s where the cremello would use his agileness and cunning to his advantage. Plus it wasn’t as if he was just some skinny gym wannabe with no muscle on his body. He still had a chance.

Regardless of where the sun was, it’s hard to miss a large Percheron horse bearing down on you like a freight train. Gryffen is moving towards this impending doom with a glint in his red eyes, quite aware of the danger and yet meeting it all the same… Until the other stallion is almost on top of him and he does what is natural of any horse… He shies away to his left which is probably for the better considering how the large stallion had angled himself to avoid a crash. His body curves slightly as he continues his movement away from his opponent, his back end more exposed for attack then his front end at this point. While Kreios is all weight and strength, he uses his smaller stature to his advantage and the agility that comes with it. He hasn’t moved himself as far to avoid the attack completely as he wants to remain close to Kreios regardless of the outcome. Therefore the brunt of Kreios’s anger is taken out in that area, to the right, mostly where the Medial Gluteal muscle is. This is a massive muscle that takes up the larger portion of the top of his rump. Luckily for Gryffen, his opponent hasn’t risen to his full height which might have brought even more force behind his attack. And although they are angled so there is not the full power behind Kreios that he was aiming for, Kreios does have larger hooves and his massive size all can cause enough pain that this is going to more than likely be one hell of a bruised and tender area when this is over with, perhaps even making him favor one side and messing with his gait for awhile.

Right now it mostly just smarts badly and it’s instinct and aggravation that makes him buck out in response. His back hooves fly out as his front dig into the red clay and he whinnies angrily, teeth gritted and ears hidden among snowy tendrils. If Kreios is already coming down from his rear, which would be the best outcome for Gryffen, then Kreios might catch a hoof or two in the jaw or somewhere in the facial vicinity. Wouldn’t that be nice. If he can catch Kreios with his head down he may have a chance hitting his mark. There was also the chance of catching the sight of his chest or since the stallion was taller than him, hitting him in the upper leg area. The other stallion may not be so blinded with anger that he reacts quickly enough to react to what he is doing. He has enough adrenaline in his system at the moment to send out a powerful enough buck, despite the thudding pain in his back end, so that he can hopefully deal out as much damage as the other has given him, if not more so.

When his hooves have made contact with the red earth once more, he skitters slightly away to create just a little distance between them> His ears remain flat on his poll and his neck snakes out, ready to snap at him if need be.

    kreios

don't you tame your demons, but always keep them on a leash

The give of flesh beneath his hooves is not nearly as satisfying as he’d anticipated. For a brief moment there is a ripple of sable fur along his forelegs, a flash of tawny spots, and then nothing. He does not dig wildcat claws into Gryffen’s hide like he wants to – like he should be able to – but he huffs angrily and tosses his head up to shake his white mane away from his eyes as he descends from his rear. Kreios does not break the rules but the temptation to do so now is strong; it would be so easy.

The pale stallion’s reflexes are not as lightning fast as when he can truly let loose, but he has never been slow.

Both of Kreios’ hooves landed on the right side Gryffen’s rump, meaning that even with the cremello’s shying away, his hind hooves are still to Kreios’ left. Regardless, he is kicking out, and Kreios has no intention of getting kicked in the face. All four hooves have hit the ground by the time Gryffen kicks, but Kreios has already launched himself forward and to his right in that time as well, relying on his left legs to propel himself forward, and fulling intending to follow Gryffen as the smaller stallion moves away. Because of their angles, Gryffen’s left hind leg would have to spin around his body to get anywhere near Kreios’ body, but his right hoof is a different story.

It thuds against Kreios’ chest and is sliding toward his left shoulder when the percheron hybrid launches himself forward. His back hooves dig into the red clay as he lifts his forequarters forward and up, shoving himself toward Gryffen. Having leapt forward with the other stallion’s hoof still on his shoulder, Kreios can only hope that even the other stallion’s superior agility won’t be enough to let him escape. Bucking high enough to kick a rearing 18hh stallion in the jaw requires quite a bit of extension on Gryffen’s part. Ideally the cremello stallion will still have hind quarters up in the air when Kreios collides with his hindquarters for a second time. Though his chest is likely to make heavy contact with the upper part of Gryffen’s stifle, that is not his true goal.

He does intend to hit Gryffen while the stallion only two legs on the ground, but the point is to knock him off balance (should be an easy feat, given Kreios’ size) and simply stomp him into the ground with his front hooves. He longs for his sharp teeth, for the chance to sink them into his opponent’s already bruised rump. But he does not; his attacks are limited in more ways than one. He wonders, fleetingly, if Gryffen is aware that if Kreios were to lose this fight there will immediately be another, one unlimited by Gryffen’s desire for a fair and traitless battle. Kreios will fight even with the bruise on his chest, even with the blood pooling at the surface and welling out here and there from the impact and rough surface of Gryffen’s hooves scraping along the hide of his chest. It hurts, but he is sure that it hurts less than Gryffen will if he’s successfully pushed to the ground and stomped on.

Kreios is not high off the ground – perhaps six inches between his front hooves and the dirt – but an eighteen inch difference should be more than enough to accomplish what he needs to. If he can get Gryffen down (or even stumbling) a few quicks stomps and a kick or two on his next turn of attacks should be enough mangle Gryffen enough that he concedes. With this in mind he stays close, his dark eyes wary.

Kreios is like a dumb bully, all he knows is how to throw his weight around. There’s no cunningness behind the decision, there’s no class. If his power had been allowed then perhaps it would be different but Gryffen highly doubts it. The percheron is like an idiotic ogre and whatever form he may take, the personality stays the same. Kreios also seems to think that he is hovering in mid air, as if bucking takes an extravagant amount of time to expel the energy and recuperate. Bucking is quick and fast and as it was a reflex move and not one he put a lot of thought behind, he definitely hadn’t lingered in his movements. As he had turned his body and they are angled, Kreios pushing himself forward with his front legs in the air would merely push the other stallion aside as his back legs were coming back down to earth. His decent was already happening and even though his opponent is larger than him, they are close enough that there’s not enough of a charge or contact made to bowel him over the way Kreios would like. Yes, it makes Gryffen stumble and it takes him a few seconds to stop looking like a newborn foal, but he gathers himself enough and simply turns a red eye glare at the aggressor.

Since he stumbles, it brings him away from Kreios. Not really putting him in the vicinity to be immediately pounced upon and pummeled. Kreios may be coming down from his little boxing move, his front hooves may have already hit the floor. Either way, Gryffen turns with a few quick steps to bring his body around to meet the stallion face to face. His body comes up against the Percheron’s right, though slightly angled since he had to turn around, and he throws his weight back so his front hooves can come up in an effort to meet Kreios as he descends (unless he has done so already). However his attack has nothing to do with his front legs, instead his neck extends as his lips pull back and expose yellowed teeth. He snaps at the other male, looking to close his teeth on flesh. It’s not an attack that would cause serious damage but it’s a smart move in it’s way. First, if he manages to make contact either in the neck or face area which is what he’s going for, he’s going to cause some pain. His teeth are seeking to reach up for Kreios’s cheek but Kreios could move and his attack may fall somewhere else if at all. Second, he’s snapping may make Kreios turn himself away to try and avoid his teeth which will make him distracted. Third, by attacking in this way he can keep Kreios closer to him which limits just how much power he can build up in future attacks. The outcome of this is uncertain and so everything hangs in the balance, depending on Kreios’s decision.

    kreios

Gryffen thinks Kreios too slow, but even the percheron hybrid can drop from a six inch rear before Gryffen can stumble away and turn his entire body around. He’s bigger than Gryffen is, not stuck in a loop of time at half-speed.

His head is still a few seconds behind (wondering how the red-eyed stallion is so quick that Kreios’ average [not slow, but perfectly average] reflexes are so poorly matched against this speed-demon from the Chamber. He has to catch up with real time quickly though, as Gryffen has recovered from his stumble and spun around to face him.

There is no space between them for an attack with any momentum, and even if there were Gryffen is already coming for him. Kreios pins his ears and immediately responds in turn, taking a single small lunge forward and snapping at Gryffen even as the other stallion’s teeth close on the right side of his neck. Half the other horse’s mouthful is likely to be Kreios thick mane, but the other is the flesh directly behind his jaw. It hurts, a sharper pain than his chest wound despite being far less serious.

The appaloosa stallion seems to be aiming for an equally painful target: Gryffen’s crest, coming in from the right. He expects hair in his mouth as well, but the crest is at least a mouthful, more than the pinched skin that Gryffen’s attack had gotten. Kreios does not expect anything fantastic, but at least he has the “bigger mouth, bigger bite” going for him. A solid bite might make Gryffen’s head less mobile at least. The adrenaline rushing through Kreios veins makes even the nip to his neck seem little more than a spider bite, but he knows that in a few hours it will ache. With the best of luck, Kreios’s bite will be hard enough bruise the rhomboid muscle and make moving the right shoulder and turning the neck rather painful.

As soon as his teeth clamp shut, be it on flesh or air, Kreios is pivoting on his hind legs, doing his best to get to at least a thirty degree angle from the other stallion, intending only to make it so that Gryffen will have to change positions to attack and therefore give Kreios more time to react.

There’s a quick moment of triumph when he feels the giant’s flesh beneath his teeth which evaporates the moment pain explodes behind his ears. Kreios has gotten a hold of the back of his neck and his “big mouth” theory has seemed to work to his advantage. It’s mostly his tangled mane that fits in his mouth but the painted stallion’s teeth find it’s mark on his neck with quite a grip and the pressure isn’t pleasant. He’s not sure what the overall damage will be, unable to get out of the Percheron’s reach. With a squeal of fury he responds as Kreios turns with him still in his grasp, raising him up with him as he goes. In response, his front limbs lash out angrily. Thanks to Kreios’s extra leverage, his hooves aim to strike at the front of one of his opponent’s forelimbs which he probably couldn’t reach before. If he is able to hit hard enough to fracture the radius that would be lucky indeed but it would have to be quite a blow. It’s more likely that he could bruise the cranial superficial pectoral muscle if his aim landed high which acts in conduction to how the front leg moves forward or the front of the brachial is muscle which helps flex the elbow joint. Hindering the other’s gait would definitely be a high point in this battle for him.

Of course Kreios could have dropped him the moment he started wiggling in his grasp like a caught fish and his flailing could scrape at the lower forelimb or bruise around the knee or even lower. Then again he could just miss completely but no matter what he connects or doesn’t connect with, he continues to try to fight his way out of the other’s grip (if he’s still in it at this point), feeling his teeth scrape against his flesh as he inches towards his freedom. Eventually the other will let him go in one way or another.
