The day was aging and the sky had started to blend the colors of lazy summer hues.
Fall had gone as quickly as it had come, as had that night spent with the ominous beauty. A chance encounter and an evening well wasted; the leopard mare hadn’t realized how much she’d craved a connection to someone else until then - something physical and tangible, if only for a temporary time. And when she’d awoken the next day, a lasting, demure smile had found its way to her lips, and kept the days to follow content and lighthearted everytime memory served to recall that past plea for distraction
As the continuance of that smile had been a surprise, so had the pleasantness that the turn of spring had brought with it. A perfect little girl had been born - a precious little girl that the withered mare hadn’t known she needed. It was a nice feeling to be needed, to be depended upon, and oftentimes she’d get caught in the marvel of her daughter’s strange green gaze, and find herself reminded of all the small, beautiful things this otherwise dreadful world could render.
Try as she might to avoid it, Bekkek knew the tumult of a clouded past still lingered just past the early years of her daughter’s fledgling life. And she knew that the unavoidable would be beckoning her soon.
But that was a worry for later. Not tonight.
Tonight, the lost Nerinian shared in the joy of the filly’s first venture into knee-deep waters, a joy reflected back upon her mother’s face as she watched the girl fondly from a protective distance.
A sweeping wind alerts the speckled mare to approaching the company, but the bend of the grasses moving away from the armored woman tempers the skip in her clutched heart, and a small smile teases the corners of her darkened mouth. “Dusk suits you, Fiorina,” she murmured, quietly admiring the way the blushing sky shone mutely across her armored brow as she came into view. “I was hoping to see you again.”
