    version 22: awakening

    GHAUL -- Year 209

"(souls are not meant to live more than once — death was not meant to be temporary, and she is so sure that every time her heart starts to beat again that irreversible damage is further inflicted)" -- Anonya, written by Colby

[open]  go forth and have no fear
    run away with me--
    lost souls and reverie

    running wild and running free

Gale stands in the large meadow, his light eyes on the distant horizon. His body is pointed south, to where the mainland of Tephra rises above the horizon like a shadow on the turquoise sea.

Tephra looks very far away. Does Isi still live there, he wonders? It has been two full years since the pretty mare had come to the island. He’d told her then his favorite flavor was gooseberry. Ruinam’s had been something with a long name that sounded a bit like cardinal. Gale isn’t sure he’s ever come across the rather frightening flower that his leader had named, and he is also a little glad that is so. He’s not come across the leader in a time either, come to think of it. He’s not come across anyway.

Gale’s white tail flicks sharply, almost irritably.

A few days ago, this would not have bothered him.
Their world is a quiet and peaceful one, their land undisturbed by fear or danger.

Today, with his sister’s stories still fresh in his mind, he paces. Back and forth, back and forth, until he has worn the soft purple meadow grass underhoof into a thin line. Where is everyone?!

With a sharp snort, Gale makes a decision. Eyas’ visit has given him the idea, though he’s not shared this with his sister. Though it takes effort, and a different sort of concentration than when his physical eyes can catch them, Gale sends a vision of himself standing in the center of this meadow. It will reach anyone with whom he shares a bond. Is he bonded to those wild-eyed lavender creatures that haunt the deep woods, he wonders? Those who leave hoofprints on his beloved black beaches but slip into shadows when he draws near? They share a home; perhaps that might meet something. Just in case, he adds another layer to the message, a loud summoning call.

Just before the sound of his call fades, the high screech of a sea hawk joins it. Higher pitched and from higher in the air, perhaps it will reach more ears and inspire them to come find what the sea bird circles over land.

Shuffling his white wings, the tall stallion searches the dark edges of the wood for any movement.
