    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

She answers and his lips purse, trying to decipher if she’s lying. He wonders how far Gail’s own strange magic extends, if she had bewitched Ryatah into lies. He isn’t sure why, exactly, it would be a lie, or what else they could have gotten up to. His only moment of concern was when she would not return at his command, but she is here now, so surely that can be forgotten, can it not?
    (As if he forgets defiance.)
Yet he decides, benevolently, to let this sleeping dog lie, to not think overmuch of why his strange trapped queen chose to keep his consort (his angel, his plaything – he doesn’t know the word for her, she is strange, undefinable in her own way).
“I see,” he replies, and that is all he says on this matter.

Instead, her touches her again, perhaps to reassure himself that this form is real, that she is warm and breathing and his, for this moment.
“For a moment I wasn’t sure I could,” he says, and this is as close to a confession as he gets. He doesn’t admit more, that there was a moment when his heart sped up, where he stumbled, where he shouted he name with something that anyone else would call desperation, except he has never been a desperate man.
“It was one of the few times you disobeyed me,” he says, and laughs a little, making light of the matter that for awhile she was irreversibly dead (at his hand!), and he had been unable to change it.
