    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

The sharp burst of pain when he moves too quickly has already become familiar. For the most part he is appropriately cautious, but from time to time he forgets. In time, he knows the wound on his throat will heal like the one on his shoulder, disappearing into a cluster of irregular off-black scales. For now though, it is a rough red scab over a shallow wound, one that he knows better than to constantly submerge in saltwater.

The lack of time spent in the sea is grating on him, and the golden-eyed kelpie is grateful that the island of Ischia is not without distractions. Some he had brought here himself, but others have arrived unexpectedly. Once such distraction is who he searches for today, bright eyes raking the tropical greenery for a familiar pattern of black and white.

It is still strange to see her here, surrounded by the lush forest and beyond that the sea. Ivar's memories of the mare are almost all against the backdrop of a grey Nerine or black sea; it is somehow startling for the world around her to now be so bright.

"You look delightful," says the kelpie to his wife. "Good enough to eat."

He is tempted to do just that, but Ivar has learned more caution in the last few years. Coupled with his increasingly long amount of time spent on land, the water-creature is more willing to think long term. Swallowing her heart would be delightful, but it is not quite as appealing as the idea of a third son from his wife. They'd lose the foal that Ivar is sure she carries (he is rather sure of his virility), so he satisfies himself with a soft nibble along her crest and a cheek pressed against hers.

"What do you want?" He asks her, his voice a quiet rumble against her lips. He remembers the desire to keep her satisfied, to keep her so content in Ischia that she never leaves again, and runs his muzzle along the familiar pattern of her moonbright and midnight scales. “You never did like the fish I brought you,” he reminds her with a soft chuckle at his own good humor.

The feeling of his lips tracing the curves of her body are soothing and draw a sigh of contentment from between her normally biting lips. The sun is bright and warm on the isle and Isobell believes this is something close to what heaven could feel like.

The kelpie mare is nearly purring with closed eyes, her body reaching to meet his muzzle, before he decides to disrupt the peace with the pluck of hi curious voice. Isobell opens a single eye to glare playfully at him before her demeanor shatters with a grin, reaching out to tug playfully at the shaggy mane. Ears flick forward to clutch the words he speaks with a fragile grip.

"I want you." Her reply is soft but intense as she offers a lazy, satisfied smile from their romp in the waves. "Yes, meat is not my preferred dish...but your children on the other hand..." She smiles with a sfot glitter to her pewter eyes. Iso hopes the seed in her belly would take but she knows it would not for the season was off. In the mean time, they could always continue to practice.

"Have you heard? Castile rules Island Resort now." Iso offers the information, having gathered it from passing hippocampuses in the sea. She does not yet realize that her other sisters and parents have migrated there but Isobell figured it would be important information to divulge to her husband. It was important to know who your neighbors are...especially you in-laws.

The reminder that she has borne him kelpie children brings a satisfied edge to the scaled stallion’s smile. Lothbrok, Crashe, and Kaliope are perfect children. His only perfect ones, truly. The others are land-locked or otherwise subpar, and he has taken that to mean that only a woman of the sea was worthy to bear his children. This spring should prove that hypothesis, he thinks. Three of the mares he keeps on Ischia are due within the next few weeks. If their children are unsatisfactory, they and their mothers will feed the kelpie population of the island for several weeks.

His musings on the results of his autumn experiment are chased away by the mention of the neighboring island. He had heard the roaring even across the sea. It had not been unlike the exploding volcanoes of tephra, but the lack of smoke has the kelpie somewhat on edge.

“I’ve always wanted dragons as neighbors,” he says with a wry twist to his scaled mouth. “As long as they keep their fires on that part of the sea.” He does wonder if Mist is there with Castile. Though Isobell’s younger sister had arrived with his Khaleesi and their children, he’d not been able to add her to his test subjects.

“Oh,” he says suddenly, pulling away from where he is caressing the ridge of her spine. “That reminds me. I found something that I think you will like.” He makes no move to fetch this thing or take her to where it might be, and instead simply floats and waits for a response.

She is nearly purring in contentment. The sun was warming her scales in a pleasant way, the sounds of the ocean are a lullaby that spoke love notes into her dark ears. Ivar had proven to be a good husband and devoted father.

There was not much Isobell could ask of him (she had long made peace with his meetings he had with other women). He was an animal after all, more beast than anything else, and with that she understood the primal nature of his being. An eye slid open to eye the mark she had made on his throat and it spurred something deep in her belly...she too had been feeling the effects of her kelpiehood over time.

She was a paradox that lay in purgatory between dragon and kelpie... a link, a treaty, between the two powerful clans. She was dragon born but made kelpie in her second birth. The tension between the world surged beneath her skin, a roaring storm of turmoil hat submerged from time to time in her actions. But on this day, her demons lay quelled.

A single ear twitches as she opens her silver eyes to look upon the cobalt man with a little grin. "Oh?" Coyness rose in her voice. "Well what are you waiting for, silly man?" Her lips split to a beautiful smile as she laughs and nudges him with a sweet nibble to his skin, impatient as always.

The piebald kelpie is oblivious to Isobell’s contenment, and so is far from loathe to break it. This sunny afternoon is no better than any of the others that he has enjoy in his time in Ischia, and he knows they wil lcontinue on like this indefinitely. The piebald kelpie has been living in this paradise for most of his life, and lounging about in the sun had gotten boring years ago. This excitement over having something to show off is a rare occurrence, and not typical for the tricolored stallion.

It’s been brought on by the humid air that he breathes, empathy and oxygen mingling as he takes one last lungful before diving down beneath the waves. Time above the surface soothes the kelpie’s instinctive nature, and he has been having far more of that of late. Populating Ischia has been a task that the kelpie has largely enjoyed, but with young kelpies comes the burden of keeping their mothers alive.

Sometimes it is easier to sink below the water and forget that the rest of the world exists.

Ivar doesn’t stray from Isobell as he leads the way to the island tucked along the northern crescent beach. The water between the two beaches has the gentlest of waves, and the scaled stallion drifts above the waving seagrass. It reminds him of the seagrass meadows at the heart of their atoll, and that reminiscence is why he’s left his gift for Isobell here. When he spots the triangular rock standing nearly upright, he gestures toward it. With a few flicks of his finned tail, the sand at its base is swept away, revealing an oblong shape.

It blends well with the sand, mostly white and barely a foot long. Closer inspection reveals it to be covered with hundreds of scales and amid the sea of white are a handful of black, gold, and blue. Ivar had ripped it from the still body of a mare who must have been more dragon than she looked on the outside. At first he’d thought nothing of it (caught in the frenzy of bloodlust) but he had later returned when the sea was clear, realizing the value it might have.

If it were ever to hatch, Ivar knows that Isobell should be the one to have it. He is not sure of the timeline of an egg, but he knows that Isobell will not bear him a kelpie this spring. She can have this, he’d thought to himself – to hatch it and raise it or even to crush it and keep the pretty scales. He does not much mind either way (but perhaps that is simply the water streaming through his gills simplifying his thoughts.

”For you.” He tells her, watching the silver eyed mare with an expression that clearly indicates how pleased with himself he is.

The dark lips of his khaleesi are still wearing a smile as she follows along with the little game. Ivar was certainly a man of surprises and he always managed to keep her entertained and interested over the years they have spent together.

There is a glittering in his eyes that betray his typically placid demeanor. Isobell can feel the vibrations of his excitement and she can feel her heart nearly burst to witness his giddiness. It was a rare and precious moment to spend with the kelpie king. The pied mare is happy to drift the warm waters with her mate.

A pewter eye watches how the sea grass below lazily drifted in the clear waters. Isobell is not sure she would ever tire of Ischia as it had been far better than Ivar could have promised but now he had another surprise for her. The fan of ehr billowing tail keeps her close to the azure and ivory stallion as they draw upon the soft sands of his secret destination. Isobell can feel a flutter in her belly and she can feel her adoration for Ivar grow. He still managed to make her heart go pitter-patter.

'For you.' Her silver eyes are already on the object. Isobell steps closer to the egg, her eyes growing wide, stunned by it's beauty. It a delicate thing that glitters as she approaches it cautiously with her head dipped close. She traces it's shape, admiring the small clusters of color that pop against it's largely pale base. "Ivar..." Isobell coos  as she turns to look upon her husband with excitement, a grin across her lips, wiggling where she stood. Iso places a kiss upon his cheek rather quickly before she is next to the egg again, kneeling near it and wrapping the length of her long equine tail around it protectively. "What do you think is inside?" The woman raises her face towards his, a girlish wonderment glowing in her silver eyes. Iso presses an ear gently to the surface, nudging the egg delicately to see if there was a reaction. It was deliciously warm from the sun and it's scales were smooth to the touch. Isobell does not try to hide her curiosity and relishes in the gift from Ivar.
