    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    Adria

I felt nothing at all, freedom of the fall

Adria had always wondered what the Reckoning was like. In her studies she’d learned of endless wars, magic spiraling out of control, and the power-hungry feasting over the weak. Beqanna had been so disgusted with her people that she stripped herself bare and took magic with her, reshaping its essence and therefore, altering the horses here forever. The lady gleaned that such times were best left to the past and never thought much about what the true experience had been like for those who lived through it. Most young inhabitants here couldn’t, and this particular water horse was much too excited on the prospects of a future with her new home rather than a contagion outbreak.

That means she’s utterly unprepared for the event when it comes. Her eyes are watching @[Jinn] in the belly of the river, but Adria shivers when the first sensation of wrongness prickles over her gleaming scales. The gold-tinted stallion is eyeing her with a raw strip of his own skin hanging limp from between his teeth, and she just frowns and frowns while that wrongness festers in her stomach.

Without a goodbye the Nereid slips quickly down into the arms of the winding rapids, disappearing. She’ll have to look for him later and apologize, she realizes, feeling a moments twinge of guilt before urging her powers to help her along upstream.

Panic settles in when the voices start to talk. Her worry grows. She tries not to think about her family, (Nyxa and Hod, sweet, sad brother Tyr) and so the images of Hyaline’s caretaker, Kagerus, filter through instead. Until she breaches the borders, Adria doesn’t take a breath, wild imaginations of fields burning and leopards snarling taking the wind right from her lungs.

Only, there’s no one here. She’s rushed back to a homeland completely changed, and burst through the surface of their lake with a new, gaping hole in its side. In the hazy distance she sees the wilds of a risen island, a landmark she’s sure wasn’t there before, and then she knows.

Nothing is the same, and she’s probably the only one in danger right now.

    By request, rolled for @[Adria].

Adria is infected (rolled a 3).
Lucky you, she is a carrier (rolled a 6).
She will not have a trait expressed (rolled a 2).

As soon as the kingdom meeting in Silver Cove had concluded Solace took to the sky. There had been those who lingered for their own reason - rebellion, confusion, fear -  her own daughter, Valdis, was one of them.

Solace flies lower than normal, the thick grey clouds of winter forcing her down if she wished to see anything at all. There will be snow soon, she thinks to herself idly as she glides, fearing that the cold of the mountains could make the symptoms of the sick even worse.

But as she nears the lake thought of the weather are forgotten. There is movement as a golden mare erupts from the depths of Hyaline's Heart. The Caretaker's heart sinks a little at the sight of her, despite her pretty face, and she tilts her weight forward to lower herself self from the sky in a sweeping circle.  The lacework of ivory across the stranger's belly identifies her to Solace as a girl Kagerus had welcomed into the kingdom. Her evening conversations with her mate often began with a recounting of the days event's, and although her name had slipped her memory, Solace knows she is landing before one of Hyaline's own.

She tucks her wings away, noting that the mare exhibits none of the symptoms Warrick had, and her hope rises ever so slightly, adding importance to her message. "Silver Cove it's called," she answers amazed look towards the new land form she had seen in her just as she was landing with a nod,  "and there the sickness can not touch you there." Solace says calmly, despite the urgency she feels.

"But you're not safe here." It was not the way she would normally begin a conversation, but today was far from a normal day.

    Adria

I felt nothing at all, freedom of the fall

The Queen herself comes for insignificant Adria. No small matter. Her lilac-toned eyes leave the horizon where Silver Cove rests and they follow the punctual flight of Kagerus’ mate down from the sky where she reigns and onto the earth where Adria meets her, trudging (for once) through the water and up the shoreline. For one so casually lovely without effort, Adria looks worn out and somewhat in a state of disarray from all the excitement, gratitude and clinging hope obvious in her reply when she says, “Not safe in Hyaline? Oh thank the Gods for Silver Cove …”

A woman and yet, a child.

“I’ll go to join them immediately.” She promises in her casual accent, both hind hooves lingering amidst the icy ripples of a quiet lake. The scene behind them seems impossibly beautiful and yet, both mares are trying their best not to let a deep fear take root and shake their foundations. “I can’t heal,” The Nereid admits sullenly, “but I can protect.” She turns the phrase, comically hardening a voice that could never be taken for much more than a whisper. “My powers reach their height in the ocean, so Silver Cove will become a very safe haven indeed, Caretaker.” Solace’s new initiate determines, setting her mouth into a stubborn, pink line.

The proud curve of her curtained neck arches and sways, bending into a graceful bow their kind have long since adopted. Both Kagerus and Solace know her and the parameters of her gifts now. It seems appropriate that she should use them to keep others from danger, to repay in some measure the kindness and openness this Kingdom has shown her. “Be safe lady. Come back to us soon.” Adria says in lieu of goodbye, casting one last glance over her scaling shoulder when she turns away to sink again into water.

Solace and Kagerus, She thinks to herself, swimming out into the expanse, now I know why the horned lady’s smile was proud.
A wife like that was a infinite source of honor.
