    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

She was told to visit and so naturally her arrival time comes, but months late. She feels the humidity grab her, the tropical fronds whisper against her freckled flesh as she’s swallowed into the emerald world. Her eyes shut tight when she sucks in a long, deep inhale. It is the closest thing she’ll ever get to the Jungle, she’s sure, and she savors it. The sound of crunching leaf litter is the only thing that could break her of her nostalgic trance and she blinks, bringing herself back. It’s the sound of paws, belonging to a golden black-striped cat. She’s massive and wild-eyed and she stops to stare at City. The yellow of their gazes burn into each other for a half-second and the predator slinks off into the thickness of the under-brush. Monkeys howl and cause a raucous above, following the cat as she moves off.

City finally exhales, her flesh flicking and twitching, feeling a bit electrified. Once she reins in her breathing, gets her heart a bit back to normal, she can move quietly through the forest. She finds a thin stream of lava and follows it against its flow – she seeks the source.

    She finds herself wandering lately.

Returning to Tephra had been something that never crossed her mind when she had left to the outskirts beyond Beqanna. It was with her failure of ruling and stepping down that lead her to abandon all that she had known, all of those she had cared for. She had left with no ties, no children that no longer needed her (except perhaps Brethil, but she was a wildling and grew up too quickly to find her independence).

But then one day she had returned. One day her heart had lead her back into Beqanna. Her heart guided her once more to a place that gave her sanctuary and love.

Lucrezia follows the familiar crisscrossing of lava. The streams only lead to one place—the volcano. She has often found herself there in times of need. It was a place that brought her wonder and understanding. She had found her answers to many things in her life on the very top of the volcano. It was a journey she assumes many have taken to find a bit of peace in their life, perhaps even now too considering the rise of what is to come on the horizon.

The multi-colored winged mare smiles softly, pushing her wondering thoughts aside. She stops at part of the crisscrossing stream. Admiring the way this part of the lava stream flows. It was the simple things she had always enjoyed watching. The way the world twisted and turn but still worked together, still moved forward despite the troubles.

She loses her interest on the matter at the sound of soft approaching hooves in the distance. Her ears perk forward, carefully listening. Eventually the source of the approaching hooves is seen—a fleabitten gray mare. Lucrezia makes her way towards the mare as she notices the other mare is following the thin stream that leads to the volcano.

“Hello,” she greets, there is a bold tone in her words as she addresses the stranger.

It is warm here, something City has grown to appreciate in these last days of wintry travel to get to Tephra. She slinks through the fronds, their rain soaked leaves spilling water down her dusty freckled fur. It isn’t until the feathery mare has already detected City that she notices the stranger. The woman clearly lives here, as she approaches and her tone of greeting is too sure and direct to be that of a nomad’s ‘hello’.

The blood-marked mare stops, lifting her head to let her eyes view the sabino a bit better. “Hello.” Her tone is granite and her sulphuric eyes level their stare to match the other mare’s. City lets silence hang between them, watching but not glaring, her thick blond tail tossing once against each hip. “My name is City.” She starts to step forward, her voice mixing with the warm breeze, and the splash of her flicking tail joins the rustling of plant-life as she approaches. She stops at a respectful distance and casts her yellow eyes away from the winged mare of golds, chocolates and whites, setting her gaze to the plumes of smog hissing on the horizon. “King Warrick? Is he…here anymore?” She turns her observations back to the painted mare, carefully reading her reaction, waiting for her to confirm or deny City’s suspicions that the rumors might be true.

    “Hello, the other mare greats.

The fleabitten mare’s tone and gaze match her own though. It concerns Lucrezia immediately, but she does not show her apprehension on her features. She conceals them well as she always has done since she was taught the skill of hiding her expressions. It was a diplomatic trick at its finest. However, she taught such skills long before she had ever chosen to join the ranks of politics. It was a skill that once an upon a time ago was used to benefit the Chamber—now a drowned kingdom.

A silence hung between them, but she does not say anything just wait. She didn’t exactly like the idea of a stranger wandering right into Tephra unannounced. More than ever she was on high alert ever since she had come back to her home. Too many events added up to make her feel unease. It only made her become more protective of the others and home she loved so much.

“City, huh?” she asks with a tilt of her head. Her town is softer this time, but still her words hold the hint of boldness in them. She watches as the mare’s gaze lifts above her. Lucrezia already knows what lies behind her. She knows what she might see, what might have drawn City to Tephra.

However, it’s the mare’s next words that pull the ends of her mask away.

“Warrick?” She questions the mare. Her expression turns a bit to sadness when she says his name. The multi-colored mare couldn’t help but feel sad in the moment. It had not been that long ago when Warrick had left for Hyaline to be with his family until the disease finally would consumed him. “No, I’m afraid not. Warrick left Tephra.” She doesn’t give the location where he has gone to. Something within Lucrezia isn’t quite sure why this mare has come looking for Warrick. Instead, she insists on finding out exactly why.

    “Why?”
