    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    It falls to him then.

Him. Lauchlan. Pathetic little loser that has a pair of chewed off wings and turns into a spider when he poops.

It falls to him to find her. Well, him and Magnus. But Lauchlan has a strong suspicion that if anyone is going to fail this mission, it’s not going to be the strong and handsome ruler of Tephra.

The thought weighs heavily on his mind as he steps out into the meadow. He has, for all of his life, been rather inadequate. Physically awkward and clumsy, socially even more so … not exactly the sort well suited to tracking down a missing person, and potentially rescuing them.

But Raeg’n is, well, all he’s got. And he might not be quite all she’s got, but he knows that she would try to move heaven and earth to find him if he ever disappeared on her. What kind of friend would he be if he wasn’t willing to try to at least attempt the same?

His heart is heavy but his head high as his brown eyes scan through the horses dotting the meadow. He knows it’s a long shot to find her here (after all, if she was here she would’ve simply come home by now), but it’s as good a place to start as any.

His head lifts higher, nose testing the cool winter air. “RAEG’N?” But she’s not here of course. Just as he’d dreaded, expected. This is foolish.

But where on earth does he go next?

The meadow has become more of his home than the millions of other places he could call home in Beqanna. It is the familiarity of the grass, sparse trees, and wide open sky that comforts him. He clings to familiarity because it is all he has left in this world.

Of course he has his new friend, Jord.
    But was that enough?

Friendship went a long way in his eyes. Astrophel was always willing to give a helping hand. It made him feel good. More importantly, he had found it to be perhaps one of his purposes in life. Maybe it was the reason why he was dragged back into this world.

Astrophel watches the obvious black spot that comes into the white winter scenery. There isn’t much to be done today, as there never really is for him, so watching this other stallion is only out of curiosity. There is something obviously different about the black horse. Maybe it was the wings that held strangely on his body. Astrophel ruffles his own wings at the thought of having a pair of wings like the other boy. It felt unnatural, but so did these wings too. He never had wings until he came back here.

He isn’t far from the black horse when he calls out a name. The name isn’t exactly familiar, but Astrophel has gotten to know the usual and other meadow bums that called this place home. He steps towards the black stallion, moving away from under one of the sparse trees within the meadow. “Who’s Raeg’n?” He asks because something tells him that this so called Raeg’n might be important. At least important enough for someone to come looking for the person.
