    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

The field, it used to be a place where homeless horses went and others went to recruit. Now it seemed just like any other place. All horses were homeless. No one had found a home yet. Everyone belonged in the field. Last time Newton and Sahm had gone to the field it was to recruit. Newton had been reluctant to leave the Tundra whereas Sahm felt indebted to help his new home. It seemed silly to Newton that he was so afraid to leave his home. He had now been displaced for several weeks. The short journey to the field felt like nothing compared to the adventure he was currently on. Sahm was his partner then and he was still his partner. That was one piece of the puzzle Newton was happy had not changed.

Sahm and Newton had been to the meadow and the forest searching for Tundrans and horses in need of help. They had not gone to the field, and it seemed appropriate to mark that corner of the map off their list. For once the Field felt more empty then the meadow. There did not appear to be multitudes of horses engaged in life changing conversations. It felt desolate compared to their last visit. There were no homes to be offered. There was no hope to be given. The field simply laid as a memorial of what used to be.

The bay stallion trotted to the central part of the field and bent down to munch on some newly sprouted grass. Sahm did the same except he settled next to Newton with his ears alert for any approach.

She thought she had been lost then, but it amounted to nothing compared to this moment. Their world has crashed and burned, but it is also risen. What remained of the Gates is gone. While others fled Cerva had remained rooted to one place, too afraid to run. When she closed her eyes she expected to never wake and to never again feel the warmth of life caress her body. Her body had trembled in fear, but in the end her decision had been okay. Boulders jutted from the ground to her side, narrowly missing her, and she took it as a sign that there is more that she is destined for. While there was no longer a Gates she realized that there was at least somewhere – something – else to take its place.

Unfortunately, she hadn’t been a part of the initial scramble and so she remains dazed and confused while most others have already collaborated in attempt to build a new life. Oblivious to how drastically their lives have changed (she hasn’t quite learned that the magic has been sucked from their souls) she has taken to wandering in hopes that she will happen on familiarity, as farfetched as that now seems.

Her bright, nutmeg eyes hungrily search for someone, anyone. There are very few she knows, but she acknowledges that they are still here in this new world. When she breathes in her father’s scent latches to her nostrils as does Magnus and Sahm, but she doesn’t run toward them. They had all left her, forgotten her, but she can’t simply ignore them. Her onyx tail flicks across her hindquarters as she meanders through the open field. It’s by chance that she crosses paths with Sahm, but he isn’t alone, and so she hesitates before finding the nerve to finally speak.

”Hello,” it’s almost as though they are just meeting for the first time all over again, her shyness hushing her voice. Should she be angry that he abandoned her and the Gates? Should she be relieved to find him in all this chaos? Her mind reels with uncertainty and she takes a fearful step backwards before turning her attention to the bay. ”And hello to you as well, sir.” A feeble grin trembles across her lips as her eyes flicker between the two stallions.
