    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

Winter was coming to a close, and spring was wakening from its sleep. Newton loved the winter, and he could feel his mood changing with the seasons. He was growing more agitated by the day, and by the day his belly grew. Newton would have sworn that if Sahm had simply pushed him he would have easily rolled down a hill like a giant horse-shaped pinecone. Sahm believed that Newton was simply growing more handsome. He couldn’t help but rest his cheek against Newton’s side and sing quietly to his child in between giving light kisses. Even though Sahm found the whole process of life and birth to be exciting he was picking up on Newton’s daily mood swings.

”I have an idea” Sahm said one morning while looking wide eyed into Newton’s groggy face. ”Oh no…not again, Sahm” Newton whined. ”No No, you will like this! Come on, you need to move around” Sahm exclaimed with excitement laced in his voice. Newton moaned. The bay stallion eventually rose from his slumber after Sahm gently prodded him a bit more. Newton’s belly rolled around. It caused his steps to be less straight, and as opposed to a walk he waddled. Sahm lead the way to the meadow. For some reason Sahm believed that a new friend would help with Newton’s roller coaster mood.

The meadow was sprawling with horses. All were entranced in their chatter. Newton simply shook his head at the “surprise”. He knew Sahm, and he knew that the meadow was obviously the destination. Sahm glanced over to Newton and gave him a smile before he gave him a quick kiss beneath his right eye. ”Let’s settle over there.” He said with a pointed muzzle. Newton traced the imaginary line to a tree. And so they walked and stood beneath the shade. Newton took the opportunity to lean his weight into Sahm, and Sahm rested his muzzle atop Newton’s.

i counted the stars tonight, i gathered them all
She watches them, watches the world, from her dark little corner in the bushes and trees. The world had left her alone, and she had left the world alone. Now once again another horse was coming to steal her world from her. She could not let this happen, but it’s not just one horse this time, its two. Something in her is enraged by this, something in her is fed up with moving and hiding, letting things go.

So she stands, she stands and glares at the two horses. She does not register that it is a male that is pregnant, she doesn’t notice that they are pleasantly unaware of their trespassing. What she does notice is that they are next to a… her tree, a tree that is right in front of her. A full grown mare but she knows not of the ways of life. Not yet anyways, she takes a step forward, takes a step towards them, she opens her lips to say something. Her hoof plunges past the grass, plunges into nothingness, the world is a swirling thing of light and darkness. For a moment she is suspended in time and space unsure of what is happening. Terror gripping her heart, its not cold, its not hot, she can feel nothing, see nothing, and still she manages to breath, still her blood manages to pump. Eventually she lands, she lands in mist and screams, cries for love ones, terror filled children, and worst of all wretched vibrations of a changing world.

She stands there for a moment lost, and helpless. She has never been lost or helpless, life has always been a sure thing, every step precise, every moment a reason to exist. Today though, nothing is certain, nothing is precise, nothing has reason, today is chaos. She finds a craggy trail, a steep ledge to begin her dessent, out of the mist, and into the real world. She is sure that her world still exists, that she is just dreaming, that when she finds herself she will awaken and the stars will greet her into their loving arms. But the rocks tumble, she slips and slides, the dangerous trek continues until she is on firm ground. Looking around her the world is not the same, her sureness wavers until something catches her eye, the meadow, her lovely meadow, the one thing that can’t leave. She steps into a gallop, working her way as fast as she can to her home, but its not her home. Familiar stench of rotting corpses, birthing fluid, and other horrendous acts of life is gone. Its all gone, the land looks the same, but it is clean, it is fresh, it is new. She doesn’t like new, she is revolted by the newness. Her nostrils wrinkle in distaste, just as they had the first time she had walked in here.

She scans the area, looking for something familiar, and then… You She hisses under her breath, her head hanging a little lower determination flickering in her eye. this was all your fault She growls at the two men, coming closer to them with each step.

They were happy together. As time passed Sahm and Newton had grown accustomed to being homeless. They didn’t particularly like it, but with everyone in the same predicament it could be worse. The two were together which was more to say then many other horses. Families were ripped apart, and they were lucky for discovering each other so quickly. Newton was resting his head on Sahm’s back while Sahm munched at a few blades of grass. If even another second of time had passed the bay roan would have fallen asleep, but instead the sound of stomping hooves forced his ears to perk and alert him. Newton lifted his head and looked directly at the mare approaching. Sahm, in his own world, only emerged from his meal when the weight of Newton’s head left him.

”Hel..” Sahm began to say, but before he could finish the mare growled an accusation at the duo. Their fault? Sahm huffed at the inclination. Newton’s eyes merely grew to an enlarged size. ”Excuse me?” Sahm said with slight irritation.

”Our fault? Newton spoke with an upturned smile. ”Damn, that is hilarious.” He laughed, as if the two of them had such power. Sahm didn’t even have magic anymore.

She is ready to cry the tears spring in the corners of her eyes. Everything in her screams, her knees shake. She doesn’t cry though, they do not spill over, they just burn into her soul. The stars have rejected me, and you were the last ones I saw before they stripped themselves from my soul. She bites her lip, her pale eyes turning to them piercing into them uncertain, unsure if she should believe them. The voices were gone; they didn’t haunt her anymore. They did not whisper in her ear, taunting, and choking her life away, guiding her words, her deeds. She can’t even keep herself in check anymore, the star’s daughter used to be so cool, so collected, desirable, distant. Now she feels, and she feels everything, ten times as intense as before, there is no reason for her to hold back any longer, no need for her to watch her every move. And just as she is grateful for this, she misses her stars, she misses the long lonely nights that were not lonely at all.

The moments when the stars would smile down on her, cradle, and call her blessed. Even so the gift was a curse, she struggled to contain, to control it, to not abuse the stars, and rankle them into hatred, she wanted their love, their adoration. They entrusted her with control over them, they expected her to listen and obey, they are not yours to command, her mother’s words still haunt her, reigning her in every moment she feels a weakness to call them to herself. Instead she gazes at them from afar, feeling close to them all the while, but now…. She turns her attention to the men again You came to my home that day, and they rejected me in that moment. What other explanation could you possibly have? She gestures towards the brush and small group of trees directly behind them, showing them where she had lived, the small corner she had called home.

She doesn’t frown, instead she takes in a deep breath, even if she looks an adult, she does not feel it. She knows not of the world and its inner workings, she doesn’t have the social graces that save many souls from scorn. What she has… had was her stars, now even those are stripped from her. She drops her head, her bay roan matching Newton’s. But she is not pregnant, she has never been touched in that way, only one time has she been touched, only one instance has she known the feeling of hot breath on her shoulder, her mother left a scar on her right shoulder, teeth marks proving as a reminder to never touch the stars. Since then she has never touched anyone, nor been touched by anyone. She stands a good distance away even now. If they were to talk of friends, kingdoms, herds, lovers, babies, anything at all. The concepts would be foreign to her, something out of reach for her, just as her stars were. Talking to these men… was it okay? Would something happen to her for doing so? Her eyes flit around nervously searching the world for some answer.
