are down; I need an earthquake to
shake this pity off the ground.
It’s been so long since it last lived amongst the changeless.
The creature floats on the breeze, a dancing, shifting pool of darkness in midair. Every once in a while it condenses, forming part of the shape of something it sees - a flower, a rock, a horse’s leg. But it never keeps a shape for long. After a few moments the form disintegrates back into darkness.
The thing lets the wind carry it to the edge of the meadow, where it pulls itself out of the eddies and settles down into a little hollow in the earth. The horses of the meadow pass by without giving it a second glance - it blends easily into the shadow. It watches for a while, fascinated with all the things the Others find so important.
It’s watching a bright pink horse stumble about when something … different, catches its attention. A Changeless, but a Changeless it has not seen before.
It grows spindly legs, and a body (covered in long, silky hair) and wobbles over to the base of the tree the Changeless is hiding in. It grows eyes (bright blue) and peers up at the creature with open curiosity, before the body collapses into darkness. Then it begins to copy.
Darkness turns to black and brown feathers and yellowed claws, and within moments a bald, red head erupts out of the centre of the new chunky feathered body. Beady black eyes look appraisingly down at the new form, then black and brown wings stretch out to flap experimentally. “Yes, yes.” The turkey vulture (for that is what it is) takes flight, alighting on the branch beside the creature it had copied. The original turkey vulture, for it’s part, looks askance at the copy before taking off with an affronted screech. But, Mimicry doesn’t mind. It’s added another shape to its collection.
“Fun, fun!” The black eyes return to the meadow surrounding it now, taking advantage of their new strength of vision. Perhaps there is something else in this place that it can learn from.
