    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    Time is ticking.

Tiphon never tried to get the throne; it fell into his lap one day. He isn't king material and never has been. He is more of a guardian than anything else. It leaves him anxious to resign, but he can't until his unfinished business has been dealt with accordingly. With the days slimming down to his resignation Tiphon doesn't busy himself with slow travel across the hills and rivers cutting between the Dale and Jungle. The jagged mountain peaks that reach into the clouds aren't enough to hinder the angel king as he lets his body dissipate into nothingness.

It's only when he is at the Jungle's edge that he materializes again.

A single note rings out: her name. "Scorch!" The years have slipped by, it seems, and the children haven't yet arrived to the Dale. He has been waiting, but with some consideration he has decided to retrieve them. Additionally, he has a proposal for the fiery Khaleesi.

Knowing that it won't be long until she arrives, Tiphon doesn't bother to occupy himself. At the Jungle's border he stands as still as a marble sentinel. The molten gold of his eyes stare fiercely through the thick umbrage and underbrush. His ears listen and his senses are alive with the rustling of the world around him.

WATCH THE FLAMES CLIMB HIGH INTO THE NIGHT

Ah, the matter of the children. Yes, she supposes that she could have played babysitter and escorted the princess and prince to the Dale. Yes, she supposes that Lagertha damn well could have, too. Yet the matter of the fact is that neither Lagertha nor Scorch are nannies. At the very best, they are mothers. They are good for being milk bags, chastising, and teaching, if teaching it may be called. If we’re being down right honest, Tiphon would eventually have to be the Man and come fetch the children himself.

Ah, right on time, it would seem.

Scorch arrives to his call with a miniscule curve in her lips and a swagger to her step. Whence last the two monarchs had spoken, plans had been made; yet years have passed and of these plans, no fruits have grown. Yet take root they have; Ea is ready, and Dalten will be too, if Lagertha has a say in anything. Alas, children will be wanton, and in this way, neither Khaleesi nor Jakka find themselves completely in control.

    ”You bellowed?”

The fire along her bald skin flickers curiously, reflecting the intrigue with which she has approached Tiphon. However rascally she may feel the need to be with the Angel king, a sort of interest has developed, too. Unfortunately for her, the feelings are ones she rarely - if ever - experience, and ever the caution nun, she denies their existence with a blink of her royal purple eyes.

"Oughtn't we summon the children as well? Or...?" And now, the ball lands in Tiphon's glove; this is all a game, after all.

As expected, Scorch arrives shortly after his call with a coy grin tugging at the corners of her mouth. Tiphon regards her amiably though still rather stern as his head nods in reply. "I did," his response is curt but certainly not lacking in manners. He needs to return to the Dale to finalize a few things before he can comfortably resign. The years have ticked away and he knows that it has long since been his time to pass the throne. It's only now, however, that there was someone he could hand it to.

"Of course, the children," his head turns to only hoarsely call for Dalten - his own son - but glances to Scorch expectantly after. She can summon her own child.

In the brief time they are still alone, Tiphon ties the knots and confirms plans. "With Dalten and Ea coming to the Dale, an alliance will be forged between our kingdoms. I hope for it to be by blood and not easily shattered in the future." Then he hesitates because Joscelin comes to mind; his sweet little girl. He wants her to remain in the safety of his kingdom, but alas, he can't hold her back from following her dreams and hopes.

With a deep breath he adds, "My daughter, Joscelin, will be coming to the Jungle as an addition in this exchange. I expect her to be treated with the same respect as Ea will receive in the Dale." His molten eyes steady heavily on the Khaleesi. It isn't a hope, but a subtle demand. If he ever hears word of a travesty against Joscelin, it won't be taken lightly.

When the children arrive, Tiphon manages a smile. His gaze lingers longer on his son before drifting to the young girl. "Ready for the trip?"

She knew this day would come, sooner rather than later.
She hears them calling for her and Dalten – her mother’s call for her high-pitched but strong and Tiphon’s for Dalten deep and authoritative. This would be her first time meeting Lagertha’s son. She knew, of course, that there would be some bias of Tiphon’s toward his own son, but she was not concerned. From what she had heard, Dalten seemed to be meek and rather unimpressive. It could be an act, she considers – he is Lagertha’s son, after all – but Ea tries not to dwell on things she has not seen for herself.

Tiphon and Scorch are gathered on the edge of the Jungle, speaking tensely. They aren’t unfriendly towards one another; rather, they seem to be attempting to outdo the other non-verbally. It made sense, of course – they were both accustomed to being the unchecked authority within their own kingdoms (although Scorch had seen a few challenges), and they were about to trade away their children. Ea had met Joscelin once in the meadow, along with her brother Ramiel and a few others, and despite Joscelin’s high energy and general childishness, Ea had found her enjoyable. She was sure that the young girl would be in no danger here – her mother was not one to take out her anger toward another on their offspring.

Ea is the first to join them. “Mother,” she says, gently touching Scorch’s shoulder with her nose – the most affection she has ever shown. “And King Tiphon,” she says simply, nodding, “I’m Ea.”

Then she stands, listening and waiting quietly for Dalten to approach them. Although she knows logically that she has no reason to be nervous – the Dale is a neutral kingdom, aligned formally with the Jungle, it would make no sense for them to cause her any harm – she still finds herself shifting her weight from foot to foot with a hint of anxiety.
