    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

The sun is unbearable, its unyielding, obscene light blinding and pure. The immense, scathing heat of the midday is provoked by its radiance, causing the ground below to simmer slowly with its scalding incandescence. A single bead of sweat brushes across his youthful cheek, staining the russet hair that lay so neatly against the curve of his jawline. His nostrils flare and his chest heaves with a soft but heavy sigh, his mismatched eyes peering across the barren plain, as lengthy tendrils of wheat delicately stroke the length of his wiry legs and the soft line of his underbelly. The day is young, yet undeniably droll and without luster. It is too quiet, sans the distant echo of chirping and the quiet bubbling of a nearby brook, and he cannot stifle the irritation simmering in his blood.

Though a flickering ember continually burns inside of him, aching for release, yearning to be wielded, he has managed some semblance on control - for the most part, at least. He is certain that a part of him, deep inside where the lining of his delicate tissue meets the heavy pounding of his beating heart, is burnt - damaged, with any and all tangible emotion deformed by the biting flames that burn within. The thought nearly draws a faint smile to his pale lips, his teeth bared beneath the gleaming light of day.

He is suddenly torn from his reverie as a glimmer of soft gold and blinding magenta seemingly shivers beneath the bleak sunlight, and a huff of discontent emerges from his parted lips - he is intrigued. Trickling beads of sweat slide along the length of his thick, broad neck as he moves forward towards the flicker of color - he is sizable, much like his own father - a force to be reckoned with as his gangling legs and awkward limbs gave way to the heavily muscled girth of his heritage. Though he is still young, testosterone surges within his veins, and with it, an insatiable craving for something awry.

"You," he muses thoughtfully as his eyes - one a deep, endless brown and the other a vivid, blinding red - observe the much smaller individual. As his gaze bores into him, a painful heat exudes from the mass of his body, easily scalding the unaware male standing before him. "you don't belong here."

If a man can bridge the gap between life and death, if he can live on after he's dead, then maybe he was a great man.
This heat is nothing to be admired. It is miserable and draining as the sun's rays beat down mercilessly upon the meadow. It keeps him from wanting to move as the sweat slowly rolls down from behind his ears to his throat and so he succumbs. He stands so very still near the edge of the meadow, breathing slow and deep as he forces his body to adjust to the warm temperatures of summer. The golden child of the magenta flowered mare had been alone for weeks now, forced to learn how to survive on his own. Though as he learned he never stopped searching for her, determined to find the one he called mother.

He had lost her. Though it had been entirely an accident, he had wandered too far, had been gone for far too long and she had left him behind. He didn't blame her though, for how long was someone to wait? He had been gone for days before he had found his way back to the meadow and it hadn't taken him long to realize she was gone. Blinking softly against the bright light of the sun his bright eyes stared out through the pink of his magenta colored forelock, watching as the others came and went hoping that maybe once, just once, he'd catch sight of his mother's bright magenta coat among the crowds.

It seemed as though hours passed and with those hours led to his small eyes fighting to stay open until finally he drifted off into a light nap. Soft breaths, and small head bobs kept him partially alert to his surroundings, ensuring that he was ready to wake at a moment's notice. Though that being said, nothing could of prepared him for the surprise the other's approach caused him and when he feels the warmth of the other's body. It causes his hair to stand on end, the ends curling in response to the heat and the slight stench of burnt hair fills his nostrils when he nearly jumps out of his skin, eyes popping open wide.

"Me?" He squeaks slightly as he stumbles to catch his footing and prevent himself from falling. Coughing slightly he backs up to a respectable distance, one that isn't too far away but also not close enough to be scalded by the other's unusual heat. Slowly he looks over the other until finally resting his eyes on the other's and he tilts his head in slight curiosity at the colt's one red eye. "Maybe I don't, but I am looking for someone."

Shrugging softly he looks away from the other colt out towards the others. "I'm hoping she'll show up looking for me, too." He doesn't realize the other is potentially dangerous, or even in the least bit mean. For the time being these facts have flown right over his head as he is more focused on having lost his mother and the desire to find her. "Why are you here?"

”Because I am looking for someone like you,” he murmurs quietly, a wry sneer of amusement pulling at the corners of his ivory mouth. Though young, he is not nearly as young as the other standing before him – nearly grown, and towering over him enough for a foreboding shadow to caress the taut cheek of the boy – but with a trace of his young still lingering in the awkward length of his legs. Though one eye is so dark, it is nearly impossible to discern the pupil from the iris, the other is bright – vivid, piercing, and it bores into the young boy with a mischievous glint tucked away within the blackened gaze.

”Someone like you should not be out alone,” he gently scolds, though the girth of his body is now circling him, though there is still a tinge of amusement weaving its way through each carefully spoken syllable. His voice is deep, already tainted by the testosterone that has become as much a part of him as the blood that simmers within his veins, but there is a precarious darkness behind each word. ”you might find someone as dangerous as I am.”

And then, laughter bubbles from within, and a careless grin is given - as if to say, just kidding.

There is a flickering of fire that emerges along his withers, seamlessly crawling across his skin as it drapes across the two-toned pattern of his coat – the flames flicker and waver in the gentle breeze; and all the while he is untouched – impervious to the heat or scalding potential. He is nearly shoulder to shoulder with him now, his skin tantalizingly close to his. He has burned many things - but there is a part of him, however small, that longs to see what it might be like to burn another.

”Your mother isn’t coming back for you,” he utters simply, suddenly growing bored with the dull conversation. ”you shouldn’t waste your time.”
