    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    breaking waves of change
The night was a warmer one, the newness of spring starting to show little by little since the snow began to melt and soak down into the earth. Trees began to develop buds, green grasses sprouting up through thin crispy sheets of ice. The kind of ice that crunched and crushed under hoof, turning into slushy mud. Air no longer sharp and stinging, the wind no longer rough. It was a nice, clear night, the full moon was high in the cloudless expanse overhead.

Our dark woman was happy here, the meadow was always an interesting place to be. Of course, she always ended up meeting the most peculiar or wonderful horses here. She was more toward the edge of the forest, her rump sloping down as her leg rested deep in the muddy mess she was standing in, as she gazed up at the stars. So many constellations, though she wondered how many of the larger stars were not stars at all, but were planets instead.

She soaked in her thoughts....what would she do when she got back to the coast? Should she explore more? What would she do if she went home and someone had booted her out? She shook her head, No...that wouldn't happen...I am just paranoid. Guess it's because I am new at this..., her thoughts battled back and forth between paranoia and reason.

She pondered if she would ever get over the paranoia. Maybe all new queens went through this in the beginning of their reign. At this point, she could only hope it goes away quick. She had no doubt that she would do a good job, she knew she was up for the task. It was not a matter of being power hungry or wanting to take over with a strong hand. She wanted to be the voice, the one who could really help make a change. The new Amazons would be peaceful and wise. Though still, clinging to their Jungle warrior roots.

Here though, she shouldn't be so consumed by her thoughts, it was always then that someone always manages to come up and jolt her back to reality. It was quite embarrassing, really. Not that she is scared, it is just the fact that she probably looks like a stunned goat when she is brought back to the real world by some unfamiliar face. Of course, that would be the best way to make a good impression on someone, best friends for life right there.

Boy oh boy was our dark queen a silly one. Though she was older now, almost coming on ten, she still had a good sense of humor. One that would hopefully win the hearts of her fellow sisters in due time.

Though for now, the company of strangers will suffice.

Darkness was everywhere. There were no shadows dancing, no demons twisting and grinning. It was all she ever knew, this darkness. With a gaping maw, it consumed all things, swallowing up all the innocent light and color. It fed like a hungering beast on her every happiness, no matter how fleeting. Security and stability were strangers to her, only more delightful morsels for this creature of forever-night.

She woke up and knew she was not in the same place. She had huddled carefully in a haven of trees, her golden body like a blinding beacon against their muted browns though she'd never know it. But where she was now did not smell of woodsy peace, or sweet cool air. Where she was now permeated a stench of terror. Floral scents assaulted her with their false promises of love and safety. Flowers of beauty and deceit caressed her sides like a proud mother, a stealthy embrace of menace.

Fear and panic swept in on cruel and vicious wings. She was not supposed to be here. This was not where she had fallen asleep. Her blood froze with an icy dread. She shuffled herself into sudden action, stumbling over the stiffness in her sleeping limbs, unseeing eyes wide in fright. Long ago, she'd learned the grave danger in rushing, her pretty face bore more than a few delicate scars of her encounters with hard objects, but her fear spurred her onward as she foolishly raced to be away of this place.

She did not slow until she could taste a hint of fauna in the air. A forest. Her mouth opened with a terrified wail as she slipped in thick mud and fell heavily, but she heard nothing. The permanent silence was as familiar to her as the eternal darkness. No sights. No sounds.

    Blind. Deaf.

She scrambled clumsily to her feet, dark muck painting her legs. Once she gained her unsteady footing, she surged forward. Something hard, too soft to be a tree, rebuffed her. A solid figure stood before her and she retreated a step or two in mild surprise, startled she hadn't caught their scent before hand. It was only a moment's hesitation.

She bathed in relief and launched herself at the person, too glad to find another being to consider they may mean her harm. A messy tangle of creamy hair bounced against her neck as she hurriedly buried her nose against the... woman. Yes, a mare. She followed the length of the stranger, her muzzle tap-tapping against her shoulder, then her neck, throat, up to her cheek. Teal huffed a breath at the others nose, only pausing a brief moment before continuing her path.

She rounded to the mare's other side, her tapping frenzied and relentless, inhaling her scent over and over again, learning her shape and stature without sight. Her deaf ears were unresponsive and still, her eyes were blueish and milky in blindness. The woman smelled terrifying. Predatory, but somehow safe.

She expected a rebuke, a snap or a bite for taking such liberties with her person. It would not be the first time. Her way was demanding and impolite, she'd learned long ago, but it was her only way of being, of seeing. When she came full circle on the mare, she halted at her hip, her nose reaching for her every few moments to reassure herself the woman had not left her.

She did not want to go back into the darkness alone.
