"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

all of us have a hero and a villain in us

Archam has never met the neighboring stallion that claimed the other territory in the Falls. Although they never met, Archam knew as soon as he came that he would cause trouble, and sure enough Archam was proven right. This stallion wanted Archams mares, one of which was the mother to his foal, and the other had a foal, not his, but he would treat the filly like his. He could not let anyone take his mares, he would give everything he had in protecting these equines, and he did not want them to fall in the likes of this stallion.

The two stood across from each other, strikingly similar in build, both the same height, both bulky. It would definitely be a fair fight, the large black stallion had oddly placed white marks of his chest and face, and was spotted around his back. Archam tried to remain peaceful in the Falls, although he never liked stallions, and surely would not stand for one trying to claim his mares. When he brought his mares in to his herd, he promised there protection and that is exactly what he would do. The other stallion, Chemdog, stood waiting for Archams move, and if that is what he wanted that is what he would get.

Archams eyes met Chemdogs, fury filled him, his eyes showed hatred. His adrenaline began to run through his body at the thought of losing his mares, making his anger boil within. He gave a snort and lunged forward at Chemdog, his hind feet dug out a hoof print in the ground from the weight he carried. As he lunged forward nearing the opposing stallion he extended his nape reaching his mouth out hopeful to successfully bite the stag on his stomach, causing a constant irritation throughout the battle.

Oh and what a delightful day it is today. Open sky, calm wind, sparse and fluffy happy little clouds. Newborn leaves rustle in the gentle airy currents sweeping from the north, taking with it the morning's thin veil of fog. The dew pleasantly blankets everything. Little prisms glisten across his speckled back, sparkling in his dready black mane and tail as he stands there waiting for Archam. His opponent finds him well enough and Chem cannot help but notice his emotional state. “Pull yourself together bud, it's just a friendly spar.” He speaks through a playful grunt, pawing at the ground in mock anger, a smile plastered menacingly across his charcoal lips.

This little remark must have gotten to his spar partner because he then launches himself across the dirt, mouth hungrily agape and teeth searching for flesh. Instinctively his prey-be-me mind sends him hurling (more like hopping) away from Archam's chompers. In the same motion Chem sends his left hind foot out for blood, trying to meet it with his new friend's forehead or chest, but any part of him will do. So a hop and a kick, it all happens so quickly. Chemdog keeps his momentum going after hopping away, trotting around in a half circle to face Archam head on once again. He keeps his long legs in motion all the while. He charges once he comes within a foot or so, their eye contact presumably still intensely happening. Upon the last burst of energy to thrust his own chest to collide with his same size buddy he can feel the sudden sting of an open wound on the edge of his belly. He will later discover there is a significant bruise and bits of torn flesh, pink and swollen. Ouch.

The painted draft promptly tries to ignore it and goes about his regular schedule of attacking the shit out of this very determined and apparently emotionally fueled dude.

Plan executed. Hopefully. He sends himself hurling into him, chest battering what he hopes is the stallion's chest but perhaps the ribs or shoulder [would be right side if to the side]. He brings his knees up to jab any part of his opponent that he can manage. His mouth simultaneously search for the Archam's poll, snapping and drooling ravenously as he searches for his most vulnerable piece (up there anyway). In a perfect world his vulnerable little ear would be firmly in Chem's yellow teeth...a boy can dream.

    ---
Summary: His defense to Arch's first attack is trying his best to move away quickly and kick out to the side as he collects himself to flee. Archam's bite lands on the side of his underbelly, left side and pinches to the point of painful bruising and little cuts across the wound. Words: 411  - Post One

    Archam

Archam was quick to roll his eyes at the stag who pawed at the ground It is not your mares he quickly retorted to the witty comment he made. Who did this stallion think he was? He was to challenge Archam for his mares and then play it off as though he shouldn’t worry?! The stallion gave a grin, clearly trying to mess with Archams emotions, make him unable to think clearly. It would not work!

As Archam reached out to bite the stallions belly swiftly moved in a circular motion, before Archam could see if he successfully landed on the stallion he found himself quickly struggling to dodge an attack. There gazes met and the stallion was charging towards Archam, he himself had done this move in a mock and knew if he nailed him just right Archam would lose his balance and fall to the ground. Quickly leaping forward to avoid the attack, although his heavy body did not allow him to move quickly enough. The stallion’s chest rammed right into Archams hindquarters, causing him to stumble. Although Archam stumbled, he did not fall, and the other stallion had to slow his momentum from the charge allowing Archam time to regain focus.

Chemdog was quick to come back lifting his body off the ground, his teeth were bared and headed straight for Archams poll. Archam jerked his head back as the stag’s mouth neared his face, unsuccessful in landing a spot on his body, although he did get away with a clump of his forelock. The part were his hair used to be pulsed in pain, he gave a snort quick to trot turn his body around (his but now facing Chem). He put the weight on his front legs lifting both legs off the ground in an attempt to kick the stallion in the chest, although any spot would do. As his feet landed on the ground he moved forward to avoid a biting attack, and he quickly turned to face the stallion once again, to see if his kick did any damage.

Pfft, taking full advantage of that week apart thing. Sorry sorry, post coming right now! I've been working like crazy. It's planting season, craziest time of year for me ;p

When his funny buddy speaks out, quite pissy, he observes, naturally, Chem lets a laugh fall from his grinning lips, hissing with a fake sigh as he shakes his head. “You've got me quivering like a leaf now, boyo.” Still laughing as the scene begins to unfold as most fights do. They're growling and grunting, gauging the ground with their massive feet, they push, kick, bite and wrestle.. A typical stallion clash, so far. Chunks of turf fly, the already fading mists are disturbed by their sweaty jostling. The dust clouds rise to mix into the air, dissipating soon after with the soft breezes sweep through to refresh the atmosphere. They each leave big wounds in the dry dirt they fight on. A circle of hoof-prints starts to show itself.

Chem's first attack somehow found itself completely evaded and he's left confused afterward, with only a mouth full of hair to show for his efforts. Quick thinking leads him to fall to his feet (as he was in a rearing position before) and pull the mouthful of forelock with him toward the ground. Driving his opponents nose into the pebbles and sand would certainly be delightful, but so far the roany boy has been rather slick in avoiding his strikes. A small part of the darker stallion stirs with his own version of emotional disturbance. He feels riled – his blood feels like it's boiling, his muscles clenched and his jaw the same. He doesn't like being dodged. He does like wasted energy... He braces himself for the roan's next move.

A kick to the dark gray lips as he grabs for a breath when Archam's hooves hit. Even with no wind in his lungs he lets out a gaspy laugh. At the time of the kick he was close enough for the smack of both hooves to hurt, to land where they wanted to, but for nothing to burst or crack under their momentum. It'll bruise and swell, that's all it will do. The pain is a dull burn, spreading with it's prickly feverish feeling but the masochistic side of him is delighted to be dealt a blow he can laugh at.

Only a few seconds go by before the darker of the two stallions goes charging for the other. His long strides eat up the small space between them, his neck snaked out, making him looking like an earless obsidian hair monster ready to gobble up its enemy. He aims his advance for Archam's front end, coming at him from the right. His first instinct is to scrape his teeth against face-flesh – preferably that sensitive bridge of his nose. If he could manage to grab and tear, that is what he'd love to do, but he's weary of just how slippery Archam can be. He's careful to make sure he keeps biting at the stallion's face (including toward his eyes, but won't try to injure his eyes, that's a little much).

    Summary: His 'defense' is ripping away with whatever bits of forelock he managed to grab from his failed attack before. Archams attack is completely successful but due to Chem's close proximity it isn't hard enough to do much damage besides the typical bruises and such. Chemdog's attack is a charge and repeated biting at Archie's face, hoping to get a nice piece of him this time [;

    Archam

The stallion’s eyes rolled as he spoke, everything that came out of his mouth sounded stupid. Archam never did like stallions, but he particularly hated this one. The battle ground started out smooth and clear and was ending torn up with dirt, dust and grass flying around with a small amount of horse hair. The battle was nearing the end as they were both growing tired and sore from the attacks, this was the time for Archam to give it his all, he wanted to protect his mares, he needed to protect his mares.

The stallions kick landed right in his mouth, but to Archams shock his opponent let out a laugh, his eyes grew wide with shock and his ears pinned flat to his skull. Did this snarky tool just laugh at being kicked? In disbelief he quickly turned to face back at Chemdog.

Archams body was sore from the battle, and his blood continued to boil, his adrenaline was in full effect allowing him to push forward with all efforts he had. Before he could return to reality his opponent was already charging at him, his ears nearly invisible from being pinned so far back. The stallion’s mouth was visible and he was aiming for his face, they were already in such close quarters that Archam attempted to move out of the way but was too late. The stallion clashed into his chest at the same time clobbered his face, causing him to bleed right under his eye (he broke the skin causing blood to trickle down, but no huge chunk or anything). Archam was pushed backwards from the charge, and he couldn’t understand what Chemdog was going for with the attack, yes Arhcam would lose his footing, but wouldn't Chem as well? How could he simply run full force into the stag and not stumble off. As Archam was pushed back his back legs dropped to the ground from the lost footing, digging up the grass around him.

He was quick to lift his hind quarters and his gaze was looking for Chem curious to if he lost balance or not. If he had lost his balance Arhcam did not want to give him time to recover, this stallion was so adamant to charge Archam that he decided to attempt a clash with the stallion. His body was sore, and it hurt to run but if he could just land the attack perhaps he could cause the other stallion to fall to the ground. Archam bolted towards Chemdog, giving everything he had, his ears pinned with hatred. Every step he took hurt, his legs pounded into the ground leaving a circular hoof print with every step, dirt engraving his hooves. He finally reached the stallion hopeful that he lost balance and was not focused on Archams attack; hopeful that Archam would be successful in this attack.

    On it, though!

Squeals and grunts. Thick clouds of dust swirling under a rising, burning sun. The sound of their bodies gasping, thrashing, laughing and tearing at the earth's flesh (and each others) echoes of the distance stone mountains beyond. The landscape watches them crash and wrestle, bite and kick – the trees seem to whisper as the breeze weaves through them. They encourage so sweetly with their voices, their soft song, their melodic war chant. Chemdog hears them, he feels them. Their energy feeds his energy. Well, that and the metallic taste of blood as it's drawn from his spar partner running over his tongue.

His chest feels caved, bruised, a little worse than he had arrogantly predicted before. It's harder to breath then before, even with the surge of adrenaline and the coaxing of the wind. His body wields cuts everywhere, ones he hadn't felt before and now winces at the sting of them as he tries to keep himself on his feet when the first collision happens. Balance is among the most important things in battle, he was once taught. Don't fall. Never fall. This triggers an instinct to first rock back from the force, to give way a small bit and then dive [front]hooves first for the stallion's rib-cage before he can rise onto all fours again. He shouldn't have fell. Never lose balance. Archam doesn't stay down long and even Chem cannot tell if his plunge with those big feet into his tender rib-cage even phased him. He hopes to have cracked a few of the hind, more fragile ribs, nothing life threatening. Chemdog gives a spirited rear, head bobbing and front legs striking out as if lethally wounding the empty air in front of him. He invites the stallion to charge – he can tell by the roan's posture, the language of his body, that he plans to charge with full force. Chemdog grins, the rest of his expression hidden beneath a veil of spiraling black forelock. He paws the ground and prepares himself for the second collision, which happens much quicker than he anticipates.

    Smack.

At the last moment Chemdog takes a step back a few steps. He intended to avoid the crash but Archam's speed proves greater than predicted and his weight clips Chem's broad black shoulder. He rears and flings hooves and a few snapping bites to his enemy as he's forcefully pivoted with the strike of Archam's big body against his own. That one is going to hurt for quite some time – maybe even give him a permanent limp in his left shoulder. His defense is attempting a bite or a nice punch in the cheek with those boulder hooves, but really, they both know it's over now. Chem stands on all fours, head low, lungs bursting as his nostrils suck in all that they're capable of. Blood stains the torn turf at their feet and the swirls of dust begin to settle back down to the ground as they take a moment of silence to recover and bask in their respective positions – victor and defeated.

Summary: His defense attack is trying to crack some ribs just before Archam found his feet again. His tiny little not-so-accurate defense his a bite or a punch with a front hoof. Could be easily dodged. He's sore and exhausted. He's got cuts and bruises all over, breathing will be painful for a while due to minor swelling sore mouth and a badly bruised shoulder that may pain him forever if he doesn't find a healer. – Words: 515 – Third and Final Post
