    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

Escence runs right for them as fast as her legs can manage.  The flaming wisps at her sides stretch even farther, forming what looks to be small wings.  There is no lift to them and as she passes them, curling around behind, and slows next to her brother they all but vanish.

Her navy eyes look to Jack with a perplexed look to see if he too noticed anything strange.

"Thank you for stopping her," she says to the winged stallion as they all gather near the water's edge.  The distance across is not far and it looks to be shallowed from the summer's heat.  She looks to Jack before making her way to the water's edge, "Looks safe enough".  Lowering her muzzle to the surface she takes a long drink before stepping into the cool liquid.  Eviction is close behind her and Escence is itching to jump in.

The filly's hesitation is only brief and when her body plunges into the river, the water droplets that touch her body begin to sizzle.  Steam starts to rise as the flames fight to stay lit.  She giggles at the funny sounds as she prances about, splashing the water on purpose.  Her brother enters more cautiously, the flames at his heels extinguish as he steps into the water.

They push on to the other side and soon step onto the shores of the Dale.  She smiles happily as everyone makes it unscathed.  Turning one last time to look out to the land in which they came, she notices a set of red orbs glowing within the shadows...

As they all cross the river, Jack follows suit and stands waiting for Aurora and the babies. But his calm demeanor is shattered when those glowing red eyes stare back at him. Despite the fear that grips him, he keeps his head high, not allowing Zain to sense any weakness. They are going to start a new life, the four of them, maybe even five if Amenadiel decides to stick around.

Jack allows his family to go ahead of him, then he paws the ground, rearing up tall and snorts to signal to Zain that he's had enough of him. With a sense of relief, he turns around and trots off with his family to the Dale, where they will begin their new life together.
