    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

There was no semblance of fear as the world turned dark.  Nor any worry when the typical ritual of moon rise and sun sink never came.  In fact, there was some comfort she found in the hollow, constant night, a resounding familiarity that she recognized on some level within herself.  Endless and shrouded, and somehow still beautiful in its mystery - just like the memories still lost inside.

Some things tried to come to light, but they were still ethereal, intangible things that evaporated at the first sign of substantial recognition or distraction.  And with some passing of time, Breckin had grown to accept that that was probably the most she would ever uncover, and had conceded to the present.  A present spent with the passing of time wasted away in the common lands, building a new house of memories with the help of Fio and they’re ever growing clutch of unique, promising young things.

These memories now, thinking upon them, would often coalesce into daydreams, and the day dreams would lead into a fond, far-off smile.  Not unlike today, as she stood at the grey river’s edge, tossing smooth pebbles absently into the swirling waters, and that same whimsical grin flowered demurely across her black lips.

A welcomed warmth makes the winter’s chill scatter across her side, and she tips her head slightly to make out the sharp edges of Fio’s armor and skeletal wings.  “Fio,” she says, her smile growing in the slightest while the distance in her eyes lessens, and the darkness wielded within them softens, “Can I confess something to you?”  Another stone absently drops into the water before Breckin turns back to the sound, pondering the clash of waves to ripples.

This darkness was going to have to try a lot harder if it was going to scare Fiorina. Her eyes catch the movement of odd things in the shadows and they carry with them an odd scent. It is hard to think of them as monsters, when this fire-wreathed mare is one too. When she knows there are real monsters probably taking advantage of this eternal night - when she can call those monsters mother and grandmother.

So if there are demons out there, new ones, it’s easy to dismiss them and think of them as family. Perhaps some distant cousins.

She remains wary and alert, though - she’s not stupid - even when her eyes catch on a familiar spotted form standing near the river, tossing pebbles into the water. Her smile begins then - at this first sight - as it always does whenever their paths cross. She watches with greedy, delighted eyes as she moves and bringing the light of her fire up Roz's white and spotted back, spreading with each step that brings them closer.

Fiorina is careful as she comes to stand beside the spotted mare, but not too careful. She cannot dull her edges for Roz, nor does she think she’d be asked to. They’ve even multiplied since they first met, when there were no curved horns surrounded in flames or bone wings settled across her back.

The question asked pulls a smile from her dark features and she answers as she reaches out to nibble gently on pale strands of mane illuminated by the flickering firelight.

    “Of course. What is it?”
