    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

so you wanna play with magic?
There had been plans, once, long ago before she'd disappeared and before Eight had lost the Valley. She knows of the whispered conversation, conducted in such secrecy, between Eight and Lagertha. She knows of most everything when it comes to Eight – one of the perks of the blending they'd done so many years ago, in such secret, tucked away into the recesses of her cave of secrets.

When she decides to approach Lagertha, she debates having that meeting in a spot like her cave, secret and secluded. But no, Lagertha is now a queen, Scorch is a sick mess wallowing in the Falls (you're welcome, by the way), and Eight has fallen from grace. That leaves nothing for it but for Camrynn to approach her as a queen, and to – queen to queen – see where their kingdoms now stand diplomatically. Not that it's much of a secret; there have been mares who have left the meeting, and their new disposition toward the other kingdoms isn't exactly their most closely guarded secret. Broken ties all around – she had more or less done the same in the Deserts.

With Pevensie more or less gone, she wonders how far her authority now extends. The sun queen had always made sure their policies stayed this side of a light kingdom. If Camrynn has her way, they'll be a powerful kingdom, which may or may not have anything to do with being light. After all, hadn't the spirit of Beqanna broken down those artificial divisions? Hadn't it told them to all work together? And won't it only be to the greater glory of the Desert for her to do just that?

Knowing that she will be making the trip to the jungle alone, she doesn't bother with walking or flying. She simply appears outside the borders, as quiet as a wraith. She feels little affinity for the place, although she doesn't doubt that she would be able to walk among the vines with as much grace as any lifelong sister. It's one of the benefits of magic: she need never feel out of place or be anything less than graceful, and it's a capacity that she absolutely exploits.

She whickers gently, more dignified than most horses standing on the edge of a kingdom, waiting. And as she stands and waits, she is breathtaking. The summer sun glints off the unblemished black of her coat, shining on her long mane and tail, both draping long and tangle-free in a way no wild horse's naturally could do. Across her chest, the gold crook-and-flail of her position within the Deserts shines brightly, gilded against her black coat. Along her left cheek, a trail of diamonds traces its way across the hair like a necklace. And her eyes – today they're a rich green in honor of the jungle.

And so it is that she stands and waits for the newly crowned queen of the Amazons, maybe just as one monarch congratulating another, or maybe as something more - with a million possible futures swirling in her head, longing to know which of them will crystallize into reality once this conversation of theirs is done.
