    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

The world was silent, dark and still in the fall of the night. Even the insects found themselves muted as the brilliant silver of the moon overhead tried its best to chase the shadows that coiled through the wooded landscape. A lone figure moved with an easy grace, weaving to the left, then right around the trees as if she followed an unseen path. The rich earthly brown of the equines coat looked nearly black, a feat that only enhanced the glittering white gold of her mane and tail. Black eyes were lifted towards the velveteen landscape studded with twinkling lights even as the mare navigated the treacherous terrain without a hesitation in her quiet step.

Up ahead the trees parted briefly, allowing a brief glimpse of the forest floor and a clear view of the sky. At its edge the mare paused, her barrel expanding before deflating in a heavy sigh that left puffs of fading white to fill the cool night hair before it to was swallowed up in darkness. How she loved the night, the peace, the quiet, the solitude. In the night you only had yourself to rely on, to trust. Very few creatures stirred in the twilight hours, which suited the lonely figure just fine.

    Usually…

But tonight there was a restlessness that flickered in her soul, a spark that pushed her legs into motion. She knew, though she did her best to forget, what tonight was. It had only been a year, one single year since the roar of the red dragons swallowed up everything she’d known and loved. She could still feel the searing heat that had stolen even the breath from one’s lungs, and the pain that left the mind blank. Her entire existence changed that awful night, one year ago tonight.

Where she would normally enjoy the darkness, tonight she pushed through it, silently running from the nightmares that plagued her memories. And with that unseen demon riding her hooves she took a step forward into the silver moonlit clearing.
