    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

Sabal watches her with open curiosity. Kelpies were usually fairly solitary creatures, but she knew most of the family inhabited the seas around Ischia. Sabal’s heritage was somewhat…atypical. Since she carried a mixture of both nereid and kelpie blood her proclivities were somewhat strange to her full-blooded kelpie siblings.  But that didn’t bother her.

Not anymore, at least. It certainly had in childhood seeing as she had a whole series of perfect siblings but she’d known from an early age that she wasn’t cut out for the traditional life.

When she’d forgone fitting in is when she’d really thrived. She’d come into her own, found the place where she belonged and it wasn’t on the shores of Ischia.  Plus it was, like, super boring just trying to be like everyone else. And she found that she could still be just as fierce as her brothers and sisters without as much casual murder while still earning a fearsome reputation.

She was the fearsome sea monster of Hyaline, after all. Ehrm.

But that didn’t mean at all that Sabal didn’t like a good hunt. She still vastly preferred her kelpie form to her equine form and very rarely shifted completely into an equine body. She couldn’t really, seeing as her nereid traits were permanent.  She hadn’t intended on hunting this night, but seeing one of her kind so singleminded of finding prey has stirred something in Sabal, and she finds herself wanting to feed as well. And the prey here is different than that in Hyaline, that’s for certain.

“Do you live in Ischia with the others?” she asked, wondering if this sister held to the more…traditional values of the extended family.

“My name is Sabal, what’s yours?” She can’t help but ask. She’d rarely met any other kelpies, save for her full-blooded siblings whom she hadn’t seen in years. She hasn’t thought of them in some time, but she does hope that they’re faring well in the darkness.

Then again, kelpies are more adaptable than the average equine. The monsters wouldn’t stand a chance.
