    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

Fate is either very kind or very cruel for putting Fiorina in the exact path that would lead her to a familiar scent, soon followed by a voice that sends thrills of memory through her. She halts immediately, standing further away from Roz than she would have if she could have seen her.

It is embarrassing how much she wants to fall apart in front of this mare and receive comfort - how upset she is that she can’t see her. But she doesn’t allow these emotions to take over. She shoves them deep down. After all, she was hardly tender the last time they met and that seemed to serve them both fine. She has already lost her sight, she does not want to lose whatever this is - or was - if she does not have to.

Fiorina instead laughs shallowly at Roz saying she had been hoping to see her again. Of course, she had been too - but those words feel like a knife to her gut right now. “I wish I could say it was good to see you, Roz.” Fiorina’s voice is hollow - nothing like the teasing lilt she used the last time they spoke. She wished it had not been the last time - wished that more days had been filled with the soft body of the spotted mare and the not-too-gentle dance they wove together.

Hopefully, the off-ness of her gaze will give meaning to the words that Fiorina suddenly realize might sound like an insult. She cannot quite bring herself to directly voice her current state, however, and instead, when her ears catch movement in the river nearby as though there is another body she gives away what has happened in another way. “Are you with someone? I did not mean to interrupt.”
