    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

”You’re apologizing for being able to move stones?” Obvious in her incredulity, she does nothing to try to dampen the minor rise in her voice as she questions her daughter’s display.  She might be the more timid half of the twins, but even for Eurwen’s usual reserved nature, this was marginally outside of the normal behavior.  Whether it was a mother’s intuition, or just the telltale signs of guilt in the way the leopard girls gaze couldn’t seem to hold onto hers, it hardly mattered because the answer was the same.  There was more to this story.

Ridding herself of an exhausted breath held for far too long, she sighs. ”Eurwen, my darling girl,” she begins, waiting for the filly to meet her softening brown gaze before continuing.  ”I am asking you to be respectful of me by being honest with me.  If you’d rather not show me, then tell me what has you feeling as though you need to apologize.”

As intrigued as she is by her daughter’s manifested ability, her curiosity will have to be sacrificed for another time.  Right now, she is far more concerned with not only her girl’s principles and what path she might choose to trod, but her wellbeing as well.  A weary queen’s decision was hanging in the balance, and her own course would be decided with her daughter’s last opportunity.
