    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

It was a day that began like any other. Catlin woke amongst the dew-covered trees. She ate the new vegetation that had sprouted overnight, and her morning walk traced the same overgrown trail. Catlin had subjected herself to years of solitude. It began as an intentional year of “finding herself” then it grew into several years of predictability.  If asked she would say it was accidental, but truthfully she found solace in the monotony.

The dun mare strolled through the field with mild purpose. She often eased dropped on some of the recruitment talks. She found them interesting, and in review she often criticized certain tactics used to lure the desired specimen. Never did Catlin believe that she would engage in such a conversation. She was happy to be by herself, to be free, right? The question gave her pause, and her left hoof stuck to the ground while her body pushed forward. She stumbled over her steps and nearly dropped to the grass. In recovery she breathed heavily to catch her breath. Today began the same, but a hole had formed in her future- maybe it wasn’t all bad to be amongst others.

For the first time Catlin did not finish her morning walk, instead she stepped from the well-worn trail and settled in the field. Nervously she looked for others like herself or for the intentional recruiters that often came searching.
