    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

It wasn't long before they were joined by yet another stallion. Desirea watched him curiously as he approached. Her face was soft and mild, her eyes bright with interest in this new turn of events. She'd never seen an equine with such a magnificent pair of wings (at least as far as she remembered). The way he slung one gorgeously-feathered appendage over Zaravich was charming and strange.

But as she turned her head to admire the approaching stallion, Desirea happened to catch Szeth's deadly glare.  There was so much hatred and disdain in his eyes that she immediately felt a chill of fear pass through her.  Desirea turned her eyes back to the newest addition to the group, studying him carefully to see what unforgivable trait she had missed.  Glancing him over, however, she could see nothing obvious.  What had put the spotted stallion on edge?  It made her nervous.  What did he know about this new arrival that she did not?

Desirea gave Phaedrus, as he was called, a polite smile; but it was obvious now that she was quite unsure of herself.  "It's a pleasure to meet you, Phaedrus," she said softly.  He seemed so at ease and comfortable, aside from the gently protective touch of his wing on Zaravich's back -- but stallions were meant to be protective of their mares, and she could find no obvious fault in his posture.

Desirea realized that the time had come for her to make a decision, so that everyone could be on their way.  It did no good to stand around in the middle of nowhere making small talk, especially when one member of the group was obviously ill-at-ease.  Even aside from that, the winged stallion had begun to glance around, as if in his mind he had already abandoned them for more interesting prospects.

The little roan mare glanced between Zaravich and Szeth one more time before taking a shy step toward the spotted stallion.  Their shoulders brushed, and she felt her skin warm at the unexpected touch. "I'd be happy to join you, Szeth, if you don't mind."  She smiled bashfully at him before turning her gaze back toward the other two equine.

"I hope to meet up with you again Zaravich, Phaedrus."  Her eyes were bright, despite the uncertainty she felt in the presence of this new stallion.  The fact that Zaravich was so comfortable with him made her feel a little more at ease; regardless, she would certainly pepper Szeth with questions as soon as they were out of earshot.  She turned one more time to Zaravich, feeling guilty that she had been put into such an awkward situation.  Her gaze was apologetic, but she still smiled adoringly at the lovely mare.  "Thank you so much for your kindness, Zaravich."
