    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

He’s not sure that he could ever get enough of the delicious contrast of her cool touch against his warm skin. He leans into it and the sharp, yet gentle pinch of her teeth, but finds disappointment welling quickly as she withdraws from him. At first, he moves to follow her, but the deep contemplation in her gaze freezes him before he can take a single step. Somehow, without a word passed between them, he knows what is coming. It is all he can do to steel himself for a conversation he’s not quite ready to have.

Another weighted sigh follows her question, though it lacks irritation with her or the question itself. He does not want to discuss this, simply to avoid giving her part of his burden, but more to avoid the feelings of failure that go with his concerns. And yet, he does not care to see her crestfallen at his evasion.

So, he grits his teeth as her lips graze over his cheek, and he does not try to disguise the melancholy in his own eye as she meets it. They stand in silence for a long, uncomfortable stretch, until he reaches for her again, lipping tenderly at a spot just behind her ear as he huffs quietly against the sensitive skin there. When he speaks, his voice is somewhat rough and low with the pressing dejection that plagues his heart.

“I’m not quite sure how to explain it…” He pauses, attempting to collect his thoughts in an effort to be as clear as possible. “...but it bothers me that I couldn’t get Tephra back.” He knows that she won’t hold it against him, won’t change her mind about him just because his wishes were denied, but he had thought this was the way to give her the world that he felt that she deserves.

His eyes skip away from hers, fixing on the horizon and the sun that has begun to sink behind it. “Go on, tell me how ridiculous I’m being…”
