    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

The world is full of strange and unknown things. Ravin reminds himself of this as her mind once more touches his, trying to ignore the sensation and focus instead on the words.

“It’s pretty much what it sounds like,” he replies aloud, “he can see visions in the water, messages from the Moon.” The Moon is mostly uninterested in them, Ravin has learned, and the lack of involvement has kept him from querying too deeply into what - exactly - it is that Ruhr sees in the water. He simply accepts it, a truth he has known his entire life.

She explains her ability, crediting Gods rather than the Moon or the Mountain or Beqanna, and it seems right that this new type of magic has some other, new source that he does not know. There is a lot that he does not know, Ravin is finding; the more time he spends away from home the more he is sure of this.

It is not exactly a comforting realization, but nor does it frighten him.

It’s certainly not nearly as frightening as the ghoulish face that Topsail had been wearing, the one that Ravin does his best to not picture over the perfectly normal one she wears now.

“So, do you have any other gifts? Other than the telepathy, and the…” His voice trails off, remembering how the worms had wriggled, and he rushes on before he shows a visceral reaction. “I’ve only got what you can see, the feathers and the teeth and stuff.” That he knows of at least, unaware of the other ability lurking beneath his skin.
