What am I supposed to do when I want to talk about peace and understanding
But you only understand the language of war?
But you only understand the language of war?
When her mother had taught her about their family legacy, The Chamber had come up often enough that Sol thought she could close her gold-and-red eyes and imagine what it looked like: Tatter. Set. Nera. Starlace. The great warrior, Chain. Lady in Red; all names the girl had memorized, all faces in the mysterious pine forest that she wandered through in her dreams. She knew their colors, knew their creed, but never imagined she would ever see one of them—much less the kingdom they had ruled generation after generation. When the mare mentioned the name, Sol couldn’t keep herself from spinning around to look—her eyes wide with realization and shock.
Had her mother meant for her to end up here?
Dark scales crept across Sol’s body, sleek and shiny. The same color as her coat. She felt the coldness of The Chamber once her skin had locked itself into place protectively. Though not as strong as dragon scales, her basilisk scales still left her feeling safe—less exposed than soft horse hide.
She tipped an ear back towards the mare, half-listening—Frejya was her name, Sol learned—but the next thing that came out of her mouth made the girl freeze.
"And my mother's name was Nocturnal."
Sol blinked, half-convinced she had misheard her. She trembled, half-afraid of what it might mean, half-relieved that she had possibly found someone safe—the world had been frightening ever since she had woken up without her mother. Wolves, and mountain lions, and other more powerful things lurked nearby. The crows had been the least of her worries.
Tears stung the edges of her vision.
Slowly, Sol turned around to face Frejya. She studied her sister’s expression carefully, her heart hammering in her chest. “Do you know where she went?” The filly’s gaze was unrelentingly hopeful, though something in her chest constricted painfully. Especially when her next words dared to leave her mouth.
“Did she leave me?”
