    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

For a moment, she only watches him, quiet and still, the snowfall collecting along the porcelain splash of her face before melting against the soft green glow of the foxfire drifting lazily around her. She notices the way his gills flare when she steps toward him, the sharp inhale that tightens his posture, the flicker of unease that moves through him like a shiver. She is not sure what she has done to cause it.

She tilts her head slightly, puzzled by both his tension and the way he keeps staring at her, his bright blue eyes tracking places she cannot see.

    Colors?

Her brows pinch together in a subtle, bewildered crease. “Colors?” she echoes, the word shaped by confusion. “What… colors?” She glances down at herself as though she might catch whatever he is seeing. But all she finds are the things she already knows: the gentle green radiance warming her skin, the water lilies blooming from her chest, the faint iridescence shimmering along her legs. Pretty, yes. Strange, certainly. But nothing shifting, nothing bright enough to warrant such wonder.

“I know I glow a little now,” she admits quietly, her gaze dipping to the softly pulsing lilies. “But I don’t see anything that would make me more colorful than this.” Behind her, foxfire drifts in lazy circles, the green flames painting slow arcs through the winter air. She watches one, then another, trying earnestly to understand the thing he seems to see so clearly.

Her elongated ears lift when she catches the crooked, sheepish grin tugging at his mouth. The sight of it loosens something warm inside her chest. “I think,” she says gently, “that you might be the only one who can see these colors.” A soft smile touches her lips as she searches his bright blue eyes, hoping to glimpse even a fragment of what he perceives.

“It’s nice to meet you, Eddie.” Her voice lowers, warm and sincere. “What does it look like to you?”
