i showed him all my teeth & then i laughed out loud,
because i never wanted saving, i just wanted to be found
because i never wanted saving, i just wanted to be found
Even once it is all over, and she can still feel the warmth of his breath along her neck and the soft touch of his lips to her skin, it does not feel real. For so long she had kept him locked out, obstructing any attempt he might have made to get closer. Her sudden explosion of jealousy all those months ago must have caught him more off guard than she had even realized, because it was not until now that she fully comprehended just how guarded she had been. The contrast between keeping him on the outside and to what it felt like to have him know her were so startlingly different that it made her chest tighten, to realize that now there is no going back.
It was both terrifying and thrilling, and she would not have changed a thing.
It felt strange to be so vulnerable, to find that she had nowhere to run or to hide, because he has seen it all. But there was also a relief, to know that even as he untangles their bodies from one another and slides from her back that he is not going to leave. That invisible string tethering them to one another did not feel quite so intangible anymore — it felt like a lifeline.
There is a quiet and breathless laugh at what he says once they are again face to face, and she reaches forward to return his touch, running her lips gently under his jaw. “You’re incredible,” she murmurs, her mind still hazy and incapable of formulating a solid thought. “And you’re mine,” she adds while pressing herself closer to him, her skin still damp from where the frosted scales had melted away, as if she might imprint herself into his very bones.
When he pulls away this time she does not follow even though she wants to, but the look on his face distracts her from her other wants, eyeing him curiously. For a moment the ghosts of her previous mistrust threaten to rise again, and it is only when he says that his mysterious project had been something for her that they are once again laid to rest. “That sounds awfully suspicious. I can’t wait to see what you thought you needed to do to get my attention,” she responds with a tug of his mane between her teeth before he pulls her into his chest, and she folds into him without resistance.
She would have been content to stay there, exactly like this, but she had noticed the excited glimmer in his eyes, and she had to admit that she was curious what he had been doing in their time apart. This time she is the one to pull away, although reluctantly, waiting for him to lead the way to the meadow.
