Her ears twitch to the howling of the wolves and to what sounds like another horse. The smell of smoke and fire burns her nostrils. Her eyes widen, seeing the glow of the embers in the dry, earthy grass. She’s ready to run, but settles once she realizes the fire is from another horse. She stands her distance, enough to retreat in case of an attack, but close enough to feel the warmth that emanates from the stallion.
Her ears prick forward seeing the sparks that fly out his nostrils with every breath. “You learn to cohabitate with them. They stick to themselves and the pack rather than come close. If they do, I move. It’s a dance.”
“What brought you to this side of the woods?” She asks curiously and a bit cautiously, not knowing this stallion. She steps backwards as he approaches closer. “I haven’t seen another horse in years.”
