    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

When he realizes that his new friend’s attention has lost to the griffon, Malik turns to face the creature as well. He stands beside Anath, and not to be outdone shifts to a Griffin as well. They’re a similar size and color, with the only difference being Malik’s numerous stripes.

“He doesn’t have a name,” says the striped grifon, while the solid colored one tilts its beaked head and curiously inspects the girl just as she does him.

“He can’t shift,” Malik continues, “he’s my companion. He’s a griffon, and...” here the boy’s voice trails off, because he has caught the scent of his father returning. He pauses, and is visibly relieved when the blue figure that appears through the trees. It isn’t his arrival that relieves Malik, of course, but rather the fact that his father is not bloody.

The blood has prevented him from making friends before.

His father’s breath smells coppery as he approaches the pair of them, and when the nameless griffon moves to sit down rather than stand, it could be a coincidence that it’s a little between the girl and Malik’s father. But Malik greets him affectionately, butting his once-again-a-horse head against his father’s chest.

“Can you take us home, Dad? This is Anath. She’s my new friend.”

Gale’s blue eyes glance down briefly at the girl, but he’s not especially interested. Full, and with a new power to master, Gale is eager to return to Hyaline. With a twitch of his white tail, he teleports them all to beside the lake.
