    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

The creature that lands on the dirt of the Chamber resembles something like a hippogryph. Standing about nineteen or twenty hands, the head of a gyrfalcon, big feline paws and an equine hind, with large feathered wings that carry him through the air with ease. Some of his features were borrowed from the mythical griffin, morphed with others, making him a daunting figure padding down the wide path into the heart of the pine forest.

The beast gives his coat and wings a shake as he walks, and suddenly his moving form fluidly changes to its born shape  ̶  complete equine. He’s eighteen hands again, trotting happily in the sunlight through the big pine trees, headed for the center of the territory for no other reason other than to see if anything interesting might be happening.

He wonders if the Chamber has been resurrected to anything like what it was, or if there are plans for such a thing. The power this place once had…it was legendary, and created legends itself. Perhaps the right group could knock the cobwebs away and grease the cogs of a once great machine.

Chem finds a looking spot on top of a jagged rock. He can see the gathering spot from here and some other pieces of the region. He doesn’t see anyone yet, but calls out anyway, a bellowing series of whinnies to echo across the Chamber’s halls. Quite an announcement for just a little bit of curiosity. He keeps his eyes sharp from someone approaching.

Trees, trees, and more trees. She feels as though she’s been wandering through endless forests, which, in itself, isn’t entirely unpleasant, but she’d certainly like to see if this foreign land has anything else to offer. She continues slinking lazily through the darkness, soft and luminescent like a pixie weaving through the trunks. She knows nothing of the predators that haunt Beqanna’s shadows, so she wanders without the barest trace of self-preservation, letting the leaf litter crunch and rustle beneath her hooves as she moves closer to the edge of the woods.

As the trees thin and the light begins to pierce the gloom, a resounding summons filters its way down to her. Her ears swivel with interest, for she surprisingly has not crossed paths with another soul in the time that she’s been here. Her steps quicken so that she might reach an open space, might see who is calling out.

The brightness assaults her deep green eyes, and she pauses for a moment, blinking through the initial disorientation. Once her vision equilibrates, her gaze sweeps through the scenery and she is puzzled by the lack of bodies. The place nearly seems abandoned, but someone must be nearby. She takes in the solitary tree rising over the meeting area, wondering its significance and how it came to be blackened. Her eyes slip past it to the farthest borders of the Chamber.

A bit of movement captures her attention.

Her rose-pink wings, delicate little things that look as though they’d barely support a dragonfly, flutter energetically as she realizes there is a man standing atop a tall rock. He must be the one. She knows that he has probably been able to see her since she emerged from the forest, so there is no shyness in her movements (not that there would be anyway) as she covers most of the ground between them.

She pauses at a distance that allows her to continue looking up at him without wrenching her neck. Though everything about her screams of dainty femininity, boldness colors her purring voice as she calls to him.

“Come say hello, won’t you? It’s a bit rude to expect a lady to climb a mountain for you.”

His keen senses, another perk of his magic, pick up on the mare moving about the shadows cast by ancient trees. The land seems to sing as feet dance across her, the Chamber has missed the pulse she once had and her heart begins to stir beneath the crust, will it beat again like it used to?

Chemdog’s bones creak as he turns to face the sabino, a grin pulled across his muzzle and his vibrant eyes tipping over the stranger who stops some distance off. She watches him like he might be an important piece of whatever she is doing ̶ what a shame that he’s utterly useless to anyone, at the moment.

He flicks his marked nose at the girl, letting his wild mane be swept over his neck and face. Irisaen comes slithering from his thick locks, peering from the mess of hair, curiously flicking her tongue. When the mare calls out to him her voice is tempting, sultry, a draw to bring him closer. This is how all the best curses start…

Certainly miss,” he chuckles, splashing his tail across each hip and picking up a thudding trot to close the rest of the distance between them. His head tips like a raptor investigating its next meal, blinking down at her. Scales flash like a wave over his body, but disappear, and a thin smoke starts to spread from where he stands, reaching out like a glowing fog. It covers the ground where they both stand, clearly conjured by him. “And what’s a lady doing wandering the Chamber as if she’s never been here before?” he chuckles again, adjusting his posture to slant an ankle.

A smile twists her lips as he comes to meet her. She loves it when they listen to her.

Her dark eyes study him intently, fascinated by the graceful fluidity that seems incongruous for his large build. When he comes to a rest, her gaze briefly flits to meet his before returning to her examination. She immediately notices the oil-slick shimmer woven into his mane and is surprised to realize that it belongs to a serpent. Interesting.

But not nearly as hypnotizing as the scales that ripple briefly along his skin, or the curls of smoke that spread around their feet. She has always longed for a bit of her own magic, a bit of lethality betrayed by the cotton candy cloud of her looks, so his little displays tickle her with both delight and jealousy.

His voice sends a crackle of electricity humming through body and she smiles demurely up at him, utterly aware of the rapacious hint of his stare (for it matches her own). Where another might swoon with intimidation at their vast differences in height and build, she stands rigid in her temerity. Perhaps because of her small stature, she has never been known to show fear and quite enjoys the astonished reactions she tends to elicit.

She easily mimics the supple, comfortable posture he adopts and produces a soft chime of laughter when he speaks, pleased that he readily matches her banter.

“That is because she hasn’t, and she wanders because she is looking for adventure.”

A step closer, a sharp inhale of his scent, a stir of the hoof to send the smoke into a dizzy spiral.

“Tell me, what sort of adventure might this Chamber have for her?”

The pines moan with the wind, their trunks creaking like old floor-boards; squeaking and clicking. Perhaps a storm was on its way ̶ the humidity can be tasted on the autumn breeze, and soon, just maybe, a rumbling will stir before it rolls over the hills and valleys violently like the storms in Beqanna love to do.

It is calm for now, though, and if a storm is brewing, it’s doing it subtly.

He draws in a deep breath as she speaks, laughing a little under his breath. She betrays her youth, her innocence, and he’s seen it many times before. A brazen little filly, likely a maiden mare on her first set of adventures away from the family ̶ she usually finds the trouble she’s looking for. And she certainly will find it here in these dark forests, in the rocky hills, in these deep chilly boreal shadows.

He’s delighted to oblige anyone looking for a little mischief when he’s in the mood. He slides his teal eyes down to her, “You’re likely to see fairly soon, missy.” he tosses his thick tail and bites at an itch on his shoulder, swiping fairly close to touching the mare beside him. “Many don’t choose a lion’s den for their first adventure, either foolish or brave…and then again, being brave when you’re going to get eaten regardless is just daft, isn’t it little doe?” his gaze narrows onto her, growling his last words through a dangerous sort of smirk, he sucks in a sharp breath and steps away, walking a few feet off.

Want to see the rest of it then? Maybe we can find this…adventure..together. ” he turns back to look at her, looking over his speckled back with his smirk still bright. His body is swallowed by the dark shadows cloaking the path, his glowing smoke trailing behind and starting to emanate thicker from around his feet, dancing around his black frame in the murkiness.
