    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

[private]  i'll reach out my hands in the dark
    #1
Malik looks down at the filly, and she looks back up at him with blue-grey eyes as dark as the underbelly of a thundercloud.

She blinks, and he blinks back at her.

She turns her head, and blinks again, and then her attention is caught by an early swift, swooping through the evening sky in search of a meal.

Malik watches her watch the bird, but he glances now and then over his shoulder as his mother disappears down the path that leads toward the northern sea. What is he supposed to do with a baby, he thinks, and why is it up to him to name it? Surely that was something a parent did.

Well, Malik supposes, if he’s going to think of a name, he’ll need to think of a good one. In the meantime, he tells the palomino filly with her downy, colorless wings, they’ll go to the entities, to receive her inheritance as a child of Hyaline.

His sister walks very slowly, Malik learns, and is not the most agile and descending a mountainside. The black colt is wearing his equine shape so as to best model movement to the filly, but in exasperation he turns to a striped buck instead, and leaps with exaggerated ease down the slope.

A moment later, the palomino filly - now a gold and blue kid - bounds up to him, her cloven hooves grasping the rough stone of the mountain with ease. Malik laughs and nods approvingly; glad that she is a fitting descendent of the Pack.

Beside the lake, he encourages her to shift to something older, and the pair of them splash about through the water as adolescent bears, startling more salmon than they catch. They’re full when they reach the entities, and the last rays of sunlight have left the sky. Light comes now from the flaming tree and the full moon, reflecting off the water and the thin layer of spring snow so that the pair of children need not adjust their eyes to the darkness.

Malik encourages his sister to approach the entities. Too young to be afraid, she does so, and Malik is relieved to see that - unlike Raum - she does not immediately begin to flail about in pain. There is, however, an odd sort of fizzing to the air, and he watches as his sister’s body transforms from a bear, to a filly, to a grown mare. Then he blinks, and she is a filly again, shaking her head in amazement and trotting toward him.

She had wished to be as beautiful as their mother, she tells him, the most beautiful in all the world. And perhaps she might be, he thinks, remembering the brief image of the adult she would become. She could become a swan, but for the moment he thinks that her blessing from the entities has made her a rather uglier duckling.

Too kind to admit this, Malik leads the way back up the mountain, to the cave where they’ll rest for the night. Just before he falls asleep, he settles on a name.

“You’re Myrna.” he tells his sister. “That’s your name.”

“Myrna,” she repeats with a sleepy nod, and then her blue-grey eyes close, and she snuggles closer before falling asleep.

Ooc: viszla got “enhanced beauty” from the cranatomy entity and also now officially exists outside my head
