Assailant -- Year 226
"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

The meeting was over, and Levi had turned to walk down by the lake and find solitude. He had been left alone for most his life and he had grown accustomed to the silence. Now, he often preferred it. Amet had played the part of gracious host well, yet the interaction had still left him feeling... tired. So he had bowed out, leaving Kolera to talk with the king or explore alone as she would. And something else had commanded his attention and made him feel a need to leave the company of the two. The crest of his neck and tail inched with an infuriating intensity. With heavy strides, the massive stallion presses his bulk through the brush. He finds a secluded place, where there is a tree that looks more sturdy than the rest, and begins to scratch the top of his neck along the rough bark. Bark falls in pieces around him yet still the itch only seems to intensify until it becomes a burning. With a grunt of frustration, the mahogany beast reaches for the flames in his belly. The fire materializes in a spinning blade as wide a river-rock yet thin as ice. The flame strikes his neck where the sensation is the worst and the itch is gone. With a start, Levi realizes his short-cropped mane is replaced with a crown of living flame. Before long, some of the fire spreads and his dark tail is also replaced with flame. For a moment he hesitates, fearing he will be accused of attempting to burn down Hyaline for a second time, before curiosity wins out (as it always does) and he walks to the lake to see his reflection in the glassy lake. Oh She says it, and he thinks it. A dark mare turns to face him with red puffy eyes. He had been too distracted by the changes he was undergoing to continue to look for strangers. She says something about a view but his mind is elsewhere, and he takes several long strides into the lake. The icy water is above his hocks when he turns back to face the shore, and he glances up to where the scarred mare had been while he waits for the ripples to disperse. "I'm not here for the view." Levi so scream you, out from behind the bitter ache.

Her eyes flow over his made and tail of flame and her face seems to darken with judgment. 'Do you greet all fire magicians with such prejudice,' he thinks but does not say. Where he came from it seemed like there were more horses that could manipulate fire than those that couldn't, and he wonders if she greets them all this way. He does not recognize her from that night, but it is possible she had been there and seen him in those brief moments he spent indulging his flames all those years ago. He had been hard to miss. "A drink." He says, bored and final. The fact that his existence makes her feel threatened causes his lips to press together into a tight line, and any fascination she may have felt to fade. He was standing three horse-lengths out into a body of water, peacefully attending to his own needs and yet she sought to accuse him with her tone and demeanor. Surely, if he meant to attack he wouldn't come to the heart of the kingdom to relax and soak his travel-worn body first. Surely she would know that? She must be judging him for another reason, but he doesn't have the motivation to figure out exactly what that is. Maybe it was something about the cold that made all the Hyaline mares he had met so uptight. She creeps closer and the scowl on her tattered face makes him wish she had taken her own suggestion and left him alone. He reaches his pale maw towards the water to draw the cool liquid over his dry tongue, but under her harsh gaze, he halts with his muzzle hovering just above the water. "Don't worry, I'll be gone before dusk," he says with a hint of sarcasm before he shoves his muzzle into the water to drink. Levi so scream you, out from behind the bitter ache. |
