    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

for every tyrant, a tear for the vulnerable
in every lost soul, the bones of a miracle

It’s a crisp autumn morning, early, so early that the stars are still clinging to the indigo sky, the sun slowly highlighting the mountain peaks… but that can’t be seen from here, in this little meadow tucked into the mountains. Only a patch of stars peeks down through the rock and aspens that encircle this private place.

Kensa is awake, but only just barely, sitting up in the dew damp grass to watch the fog of her children’s breath rising slowly from their sweet little muzzles. Well two of them. She woken to Brunhilde sneaking off but she’d only smiled sleepily and watched the flame girl disappear through the long grass and spindly trees to the path that would take her down the mountain, letting her think she’d once again gotten away unnoticed. She does not realize how like her mother she actually is.

Star is probably awake too, but the little appaloosa girl, well Kensa would not be surprised if she would pretend to sleep just to keep from waking her mother and little brother. She is the sweetness that Kensa needed in a first child, to give her the confidence to mother the more wild Brunhilde. No need to keep up the ruse of sleep. Kensa shakes her pretty head and gets to her feet, nosing at the soft rounded backs of her curled up babes. “Good morning, darlings.” She murmurs, deciding to spend her day with the two of them.

this house is rust and wreckage, holding on by just a hope
but I believe in dust and magic and every word you ever wrote

They were growing, learning, socializing. They were stretching their legs and testing their limits. Star hovered some over her brother, because he let her. Hildy was often out and about on her own adventures, thinking she was getting away with something whenever she snuck away. Star often peeked an eye out when she snuck away during the night, noted whatever direction she went in and would follow later. It wasn’t hard to find her sister, one had to only follow the scent of burnt butterflies.

This morning was no exception. Star was longer in leg, finally starting to fill in along her body, starting to become more adult than child. Still on that cusp of childhood, still barely hanging on, but it was clear as she came closer and closer to her second birthday that too soon she would be off longer than she was home.

Crynn still curled next to her, and she would be here for him a while yet. He had lingered near her or their mother, a quiet observant boy. So she only peered an eye open briefly as Hildy snuck off. A shift in their momma made her eye close back shut and she kept her breathing slow and steady. She could feel the earth coming alive, feel the changes in it and when the rustling of their mom came closer, when she felt the warmth of her breath on her back and the gentle lilt of her mother’s words.

A smile curls her lips and she sprawls out in the grass, careful to spread her legs around Crynn who flops half on top of her, blinking open eyes still full of sleep. He yawns and Star waits till he gets up before she shifts back forwards and gets up herself. She presses and curls herself into Kensa, like a cat, before nibbling affectionately on the point of her hip. “Hi mom.”

A turn to look back over her shoulder at Crynn, who was just standing in one spot, his bleary eyes staring at nothing as he woke up. A small chuckle but she makes no move to go to the half asleep boy.

Her sweet girl is so tall already, Kensa looks at Star with bittersweet pride. She affectionately grooms her eldest’s sloped back when she presses close. Soon the girlish prettiness would give way to soft feminine beauty but Kensa still saw the child she’d found in the den back when her heart had desperately craved motherhood. ”You look like you slept well.” She says with a soft laugh as her eyes flick to the slowly waking Crynn who seems to be struggling to greet the morning.  Her little boy doesn’t seem to take to the mornings like his mother and sisters do and she whickers to draw the bleary-eyed colt over so that she can nuzzle him into waking and nibble at the whorls of mane between his ears.

“What should we do with ourselves today, Crynn? Your choice.” The last to words she says playfully, gently, before tossing a golden eyed glance back at her nearly-grown daughter with a conspiratorial smile. “We could go down to the beach, maybe?” She suggests in case the boy is not awake enough to choose an adventure, waiting for Star to toss out her ideas as well. She hoped the children that came to her in the future would also enjoy lingering near their mother, playing with their siblings. Astarielle’s bond with Crynn always made their mother smile, the filly seemed to know just what her little brother needed without the two of them exchanging a single word. Hopefully her son would not be grumpy that his mother had wanted to shower him with affection first thing in the morning.
