    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

WATCH THE FLAMES CLIMB HIGH INTO THE NIGHT

Summer wore on dutifully this year. Swath in warmth, the season spread her joy across Beqanna rather kindly, perhaps recognizing how cruel it might be to deliver natural disasters during this time of contagion and illness. Then again, Scorch never considered the Beqannan gods to be merciful, so perhaps it was just luck - or perhaps their minds lay elsewhere. Either way, the Dosh spent her days thankful for the kind weather, meandering between residents and offering crone-ish advice.

At night, she often found herself beside the magician she'd chosen as her own some months ago... Had it been more than a year now? She shook her head to think of it as such. More and more these days, a kind of guilt grew in her chest, and she worried that Brennen would pick up on it as he usually could; but he made no mention of her disquiet.

    Not overtly, at least.

As they stood together in pleasant harmony, Scorch would hear the familiar calls of her native Jungle creatures; leopards and parrots and elephants alike. At first she'd been shocked, waking from a dream and nearly panicking for her desperate want of home; but Brennen's subtle gift to her gradually became expected as she fell to sleep. The lullaby of home eased her discomfort effectively, and for now, her guilt became sidelined.

    Her thoughts, however, never quieted.

Cantering purposefully towards the small grove of trees she knew to be frequented by her son and his wife the Queen, Scorch's mind played with several harmless theories as to their relationship. She compared them first to her and Hestoni, then to Echion and herself, and then to Brennen and Galilee and then again to herself and Brennen. She had lived long enough now that endless comparisons could be made - and her immortality ensured that she would only continue to accumulate more and more relations as the makeup of Beqanna gradually changed over the course of time.

As she thought, the brawny muscles of her figure contracted and relaxed beneath the thin gauze of her mutilated hide, their strength an impressive representation of her health in these times of illness. While she suspected that she had definitely been introduced to the contagion by now, Scorch figured that the symptoms would not be coming her way. Too much time passed for that; she lived now without fear of the plague, as foolish as that may be.

Grove now in sight, the ancient Amazon pulled up short and tossed her head. In the next moment, a spectacular eruption of bright stars bloomed above her, summoning the family which hopefully resided within the grove at this time. Then, Scorch playfully had an idea; an in the next moment, long black strands of mane and tail cascaded down her neck and haunches, perfectly detailed threads of darkness-made horse hair completed even with highlights to texturize them. Peering around her rump to admire her handiwork, Scorch settled into a hip triumphantly; wouldn't this be a surprise!

    ...Sometimes, it's the little things.

The heat of summer in Nerine might not be as heavy on them as it would have been elsewhere, but compared to the coolness of the island, Leilan definitely prefers the latter. Perhaps it's the ability to generate ice, and it's subsequent apparent resistance to cold, that invokes the opposite feeling towards heat. Nevertheless, as he'd once noticed in the Ischian summer, he rather prefers a different climate.

Not that he won't survive in Nerine, or anywhere really, but the coolness of the trees and caves is something he prefers to... pretty much any of the more open spaces and sun-heated rocks in the coastal kingdom. So he sticks with travelling the southern border, or swimming back and forth between Nerine and the Icy Isle - but his family resides here, and so, more often than not, here is a good place to go looking for him as well. Just never a hundred-percent guarantee.

But his mother is lucky. Or perhaps caught his scent.

With family on the forefront of his mind, he always worries a little, these days. Chryseis had turned out to be sick. Either from travelling or lack thereof; Roseen and Thorgal hadn't been in Nerine for a while and perhaps they were held up by not daring to travel in the plague-ridden country. Then there was Ophanim, who'd travel as much as Jenova and he had no idea where to look for him, either. Chryseis was the only one he could help at this moment. And of course, Breckin and the twins.

Who had happened to (either under the influence of their sister or not) swim across to Nerine and so, the family had finally moved. Today, he'd spend his time going back and forth between checking all was still well on the island and caring for his family, the ones he knew to be close anyway. Sleep was overrated - sort of. Anyway, he probably wouldn't feel well-rested until the matter of the island had been settled, or until the girls were old enough - scratch that, they were never going to be old enough not to worry about them. Chryseis proved that very well, coming back with both Kelpie and boyfriend-marks on her body. Even if she thought she was an adult, the two-year old still had much to learn about boys and men... she'd never even asked about why she wasn't Breckin's daughter, and she'd probably be very disappointed when she finally found out.

It is a relatively quiet moment where he's half-dozing, half-trying-to-keep-an-eye-on-the-girls. Breckin is around too, probably doing a better job at the latter, her attention on the sounds of their voices while his own eyes now and then switch visions to catch any approaching danger before it ever nears them.

His mother putting out a show gets noticed easily; seeing as the lights appear harmless and he knows only of family being able to make them dance like that, he tosses his head and with a soft snorts alerts his wife (he's not quite sure she knows about him thinking of her as such, but it's the case anyway; to him she's more than just someone to play with, or lie with, a difference he knows quite well). He steps out quickly, though the sounds of Oisin and Eurwen are easily distinguishable when he does.

He comes to a halt and tilts his head at his mother as soon as she comes into view, which is perhaps earlier than with most, but mutual between his mother and him. A low chuckle follows. "Who are you and what did you do to my mother?" he teases, though he starts to move towards her once again.
