"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

Boyo could maybe use a quote or something...
He was at peace. A pile of leaves cushioned him as he lay curled upon the earth. Soft, gentle breezes teased his little crested black mane every few minutes, bringing new smells then drifting away again. He'd not wanted for anything since waking here, little creatures delivering milk before he was even aware that he was hungry, then leaving him alone again with the other part of him.
There at his side, wrapped around itself and pressed comfortably against him, was the Other. It was an extension of himself, an almost-mirror. Save for a slightly darker coloration, they were identical. Bonded and linked. When it raised its head, he found his rising with it, following the gaze to whatever had attracted its attention. When it rested its muzzle on his hip, he mimicked and did the very same. Together, he was complete. It was a part of him but not him, the bodily form of everything he was not.
She was the life and play to his quiet steadiness, the girl to his boy. She was the joy, the beauty. The quester, the adventurer. She made up for everything he lacked and never left his side for too long.
They seemed to take turns being watchful, like a silent agreement between them. One that did not require words. He woke each time she snapped her eyes to something unseen, much as she did now. He blinked the sleep from his eyes slowly, squeaking out a big yawn and smacking his chops quietly. As always, he followed her gaze, but the dull shadows of early dawn could not hold his attention for long and he turned back to her.
So serious! He shoved his nose at her, bumping her chin and knocking it to the side, trying to dislodge her stare from whatever held her attention. I'm heeerrreee. Right here!
Nudge. Bump.

other orphans are soooo welcome to come play while everyone waits for homes xD puppy pen style!
any curiosity on title: its "orphanage" spelled backwards as the kids within would see the letters on the gates and read it that way. idea adapted from a book called The Lion's Paw
The air was chilly in the wee hours of morning before dawn, the gentle breezes of spring soft and slowly trying to chase away the winter cold. Without the warmth of the sun, though, all it did was make her cuddle into him more. Just like she did in the before, but out here was so different. Less squishy, and much more roomy. She can get up and run around if she wanted to, but for now she was content to rest her chin on his rump in the chilly morning. And there was instant comfort and satisfaction when he mirrored her and placed his own chin on her hip. Everything in this world she'd opened her eyes to had been new and exciting, but one remained the same- familiar and cozy. The body beside hers, fuzzy and warm, slightly larger than her with a coat a few shades lighter than her own, though both of them have black mohawks and tails. They were never far from each other, whether that was out of desire or some subconscious bind, she didn't know. Didn't care. He was all she needed. Especially now, when it's so chilly.
She'd let it be his turn to watch their surroundings for a while, letting the peace and comfort ease her mind into a restful doze. But before long, she woke to him twitching off to sleep. Nuzzling him softly, she took over the watch, gold-flecked eyes tracking the shadows and ears twitching to all the sounds. First time she'd opened her eyes, unbenownst to her, they'd flashed a yellow brown with the pupils narrowing into vertical slits. Like a cat. It had only lasted a heartbeat or two before they shifted back to a honey brown and normal shape. But the vision remained, and now in the low light of morning- when her brother could see hardly a thing- her sight was at its best. A slight smile touched the small girl's lips as her gaze followed the critters within the Den's terrain. Squirrels dashed around, a bird gathered some breakfast and flew back to its nest, and a bunny caught her interest most of all as it rattled the brush and nibbled on some vegetation. Her eyes tracked its every move with ears trained on it, and she began to feel the most curious urge to get up and chase it. To pounce.
Just as she was contemplating how fun that would be if she could catch it, her other half awoke and squeaked. He did that when he yawned sometimes, and she thought maybe it was his way of getting her attention or something. Even still she watched the bunny, and then her eyes jumped to the squirrels again when they skitter about. She was rather intent in her watch, focused. Until he nudged at her chin and broke her concentration. In rapid procession, the girl pinned her ears and mewed at him- a little squeal of a sound- before snapping at his face in playful aggravation. Her gums clacked a moment before she booped his nose back and then pulled away, ears pricking back up at him. Why you do that? her face seemed to say, the words going without saying. They could do that, between the two of them; read each other without speaking, through their bond. She eyed him from the corner of her vision a moment and then aimed quickly for his ear, seeking to gum it and maybe slobber on it a little. Because it would be fun to see if that aggravated him too.
And another line worth of quote can go here if you like.
Here it comes with no warning; capsize, i'm first in the water
It is during the hour of the wolf that she rises from her slumber. Not even the sign of dawn has reached the horizon. Lucrezia has found herself less occupied these days in land that holds the small volcano and hot spring. Tephra has held her presence far too long. If anything it felt like today was a good day to explore beyond the borders of Tephra and see what this new world offered. She has yet to see what lies beyond the normal lands that the Reckoning did not sweep away. It was an opportunity she was willing to take and an adventure is something she needed desperately right now.
She lets the wind and unfamiliar scents set her direction for the journey. The idea of an adventure is thrilling for her. It brings back fond memories of her childhood. Memories she once longed to keep at a distance in her mind. Yet, this time, she could not help but latch onto old habits and memories that had once filled her with happiness.
Her hooves carry her over hills. She passes through dense woodlands and lands filled with tall grasses. At times she ca smell the ocean not far from her. The wind guides her in these early hours of the morning. She does not need the sun’s light to escort her through the world. It was her own heart, the very natural instinct that she trusted to guide her today.
Eventually, she arrives in the den.
The shadows of the early dawn are still dull, but the light is slowly climbing the horizon. There is a deep silence in the den but she can hear the humming and singing of the morning birds just awakening. In time the whole land would arouse and bloom with life. It was this way always during the spring time—a reminder that there was always still a new day to come as winter faded away.
Lucrezia steps softly across the land. She does not find herself lingering here for a moment longer. However, the little squeal of a sound draws her attention quickly. Her nutmeg eyes dart towards the direction it came from. Her pace quickens as she moves towards the sound. She does exactly think as to why she draws to the sound, but perhaps it was her motherly instinct that makes her react this way. It has been only a couple of years since she had her first child, Rome. Rome is now fully grown and on his own now. And she has never entertained the thought again to rise anymore (not exactly considering her newfound life in Beqanna).
She eventually finds the foals not far away from her. She could’ve passed over the young ones, mistaken them to be a part of the scenery as their colors almost identically to the old autumn leaves. It had been their black colored features that made her notice them. Lucrezia moves towards the two slowly, a smile rises quickly on her lips as she watches them interact with one another. It reminds her of when she had been their age once. It was an age sometimes she wished so desperately to be again. To be young and naïve of the world was enticing for her.
“Hello there,” she says softly with a warm tone. Lucrezia doesn’t question why she goes to them, why she absentmindedly comes to care for what happens to the two foals. “I am Lucrezia. You can just call me Lu if you want to too.” She lowers her head, tilting it to the side a little as she gazes at both of them. “What are your names?”
She gave a little squawk at him, pinning her ears and nipping at his face. He knew she was not truly angry, he could almost feel it, and he gave her a big, goofy grin. She looked at him in askance, then gave him a funny side-ways glance. And so swiftly, before he could even react, she shot out and gummed at his ear! He opened his mouth wide and brayed at her. Stop!! Not! Ear!
He twisted his head sideways, pointing his nape towards her and shoved his crest against her neck with a firm nudge, trying to move her over without either of them standing. Something quickly caught his eye though, and his torment on her was short-lived as he perked up. Little ears stood erect in interest as a biiiig being comes to join their play with a pretty smile.
"Hello there," she said to them. He liked her voice. It was pretty too, like her smile. The grin instantly returned to his face, and without looking away from her he bumped his shoulder against his sister in a Hey look!
"I am Lucrezia. You can just call me Lu if you want to." Her head dropped lower, getting on a more even level with theirs. "What are your names?"
He wiggled in excitement and dashed out to lip at her nose happily. Pretttyyyy! He thought he might have understood her question, though he didn't know what Lucrezia meant. But he knew what his sister was! She was fast! So swift! She is brisk! he beamed, proud of his description. So, so fast! So Briske.
A sudden itch had him flopping on his side, his spine against his sister. Lanky little legs kicked out as he twisted around trying to reach it with a bite, just too far on his shoulder. Fallen leaves shuffled around in a rush with his effort. He quickly gave up and thumped his head to the ground with a frustrated huff.
Easily distracted, it didn't last long and soon he was turning his head again, pressing his poll to the ground in a way that made his ears flip awkwardly to either side. Chin in the air, he looked at the lady upside-down with a lopsided grin. She was even pretty this way too!

Hey look, you can put a nice quote here.
His reaction to her gumming his ear was the best! He brays at her and she gives the ear a last lil tug before finally releasing it and bursting into a girlish baby giggle. And then the sound both startles and amuses her so she does it some more. How fun! But then he is pushing on her with his boney crest and she mews at him again as he nearly pushes her off their leafy lil nest. Nuuu! But a smile still has her lips tugged upward.
A tiny gasp escapes her as the mare comes around the brush and into their view. She speaks, and her voice is warm and friendly. Not scary in anyway. And her other half is smiling up at the lady, and bumps her shoulder as if she hadn't already noticed. The gold-flecked brown eyes don't leave the lady, but she nips with her not-teeth at his neck. And then her lil apricot head tilts slightly as the woman says her name and lowers her head to ask theirs. "Lu?" She tries, a lil pip of a sound, as her brother reaches out to lip the lady's nose. A silly snort shakes her tiny nostrils at his actions. Lipping an unknown's nose. You don't know where that thing has been!
Oh, but then her bubba gives her a name! She flicks her eyes to him as he says it and finally smiles big. She likes it; it's perfect! "Ya! I is Briske. And he..." She thinks hard for a moment. What suits him. Suddenly, her twin is rolling upside down and leaves skitter all around. She pffts at him and scootches away to avoid his flying lanky legs and the leaves. And then she has it! He loooves to play in the leaves, making them crunch and scatter and rustle. "Rustle!" Out loud it is even more perfect. Proud of herself, her new name and his new name, she grins up at the pretty lady Lu. Never mind her upside-down bubba, looking all silly and stuff beside her. Silly Russie.

I am the absolute worst. Sooo sorry for the wait. But there it is! And so darned cute xD If y'all want, we can just start a new one in Tephra, or can continue here too. Either way is good!
