    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    The Restitution
    #1
They had paid for their crimes and their greed, had paid for the crimes and greed of their ancestors. Now, a new generation called Beqanna home, a new generation that knew only of being handed their gifts. In the end, they would always come back to this, but their parents would remember. Yheir parents would tell them the stories of the time Beqanna was ripped from beneath them and they were forced to rebuild. It would be a warning to the future generations. It would be a warning to any that thought magic was there to be abused, to be taken and taken and taken.

They had settled into their herds, falling back into old routines in new places. They cared, at least, for these new places they called home, cared enough that Beqanna wanted to give them stability now. They had earned that comfort, for all their effort. The world stills, and if you are paying attention, you’ll feel the way the earth suddenly comes to a stop. Which seems strange and wrong, because it had never been moving – had it? No, of course not, but it hadn’t been fixed, hadn’t been permanent, until now.

The Mountain shrinks, still large and looming, the questing lands around it melding until they become one thing. There’s no need for so many magical lands, and there’s no need for quite such an effort to reach the top of the mountain. Not now, not after all this. However, the Mountain does not go away completely, standing as a reminder that these powers are gifts, ones to be earned. There would be no easy path to the land of magic, but it was easier than it had been.

There’s no announcement with the changes, no proclamation from Beqanna herself. Beqanna simply settles, content, appeased. Those that aren’t paying attention won’t notice at all, though their powers flood back into them. For those without their traits, they will find themselves fully restored when they reach for those familiar powers. She is not sure they deserve it, not really, but they are her children and she can only punish them for so long. Now, they simply get to live.
