    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

This Place Seemed Pretty Cool (Any)

Zhenga didn't mind affection, but it depended on who it was coming from. And, while the twin with wings seemed friendly enough, the filly hadn't really had any physical contact with any horse. The exceptions to this included her dam, Raxa, along with Raxa's friend, Anahi, and Anahi's daughter, Eiria, though the latter two had figured out Zhenga's quirks and avoided contact with with her when they could tell she didn't want it.

But now, without warning, here comes the twin with wings, stretching one of them over her body as if he was giving her a hug. As it was, restraining herself from lashing out with her front hooves and teeth took all of Zhenga's willpower. Instead, with an uneasy smile, the filly sidestepped out from under Kharon's wing, but luckily, since the colt was already walking away, he hadn't seemed to notice.

In a different life, Zhenga might not have minded such a gesture. But, true to her heritage, the filly had inherited more from her dam than just looks. Raxa's upbringing had caused a hesitance of physical contact within the mare, Zhenga not included after she was born. Raxa provided what affection she could for the filly, but found it somewhat difficult since, despite being a natural mother, showing affection didn't come easy. Zhenga didn't blame Raxa for that; she couldn't, because it wasn't Raxa's fault. It was her upbringing, something the mare couldn't control as she'd only been a filly at the time.

Thankful that the colt didn't notice Zhenga's reluctance for a hug, the roan filly trotted after the siblings to catch up. The ground, a short ways up the slope the trio were now traveling on, started giving way to the lush green grass Ischia was known for, along with its sandy beaches of course. Kharon's hoof slipped at one point, but the colt quickly recovered and warned the two fillies to be careful.

Zhenga wasn't as surefooted as Anahi's family, but the filly definitely got her dad's help on this one. As if she'd been walking on slippery grass like this her whole life, the filly made it up the incline with hardly any troubles. She gave a happy smile when Kharon looked back, his pride beaming before the trio of young horses continued deeper into Ischia's territory.

As they walked, Kharon talked a little about the horses that currently lived here. His own family included, there was also the Queen and her family, some horse called the 'dragon prince', a bone-man (Zhenga had no clue what that meant), and a mare named Luster (at least, Zhenga assumed it was a mare; she didn't recognize the name). Kharon warned Zhenga of the bone-man and how dangerous he could be, along with encouraging her to stay here in Ischia if she liked it.

And so far, Zhenga was. Though her ears were picking up what most of the colt was talking about, her eyes wandered all over the place, taking in the wonders of Ischia's tropical forest. There wasn't a lot of wildlife here, save for a couple birds she saw flying among the thick canopy tops of the trees. The forest was quiet and melodic, with a soothing sound that brought a chill to the roan filly's bones. The temperature was also quite nice; not too humid, but hot enough here in the forest that it'd be a relief to get out in the sunlight again.

Kharon paused ahead of the two fillies, but Zhenga was so absorbed in everything else that she almost ran into him. The only reason she didn't was because she stepped on a small rock that caused her to slightly step off balance; the filly had to focus to recover herself. And that helped her see that Kharon was no longer walking, instead standing calmly next to his sibling and looking out over the clearing they'd arrived at.

Zhenga thought the beaches were amazing, but this was something else entirely. Stretching out before them was a large expanse of meadow grass, its lush coloring not far from the shades of the leaves on the trees bordering the young horses and the meadow. The blades swayed in the light breeze grazing over the meadow, causing the grass to glitter in the sunlight. Patches of flowers sprouted out from various areas, all a variety of colors from bright pink to fire orange to deep ocean blue. She even spotted a couple purple ones, reminding her of the twin's odd-colored paint coats.

Kharon left the fillies and lowered his body to the ground. He proceeded to roll a couple of times, seeming to enjoy himself before lifting his head and looking back up at the fillies. He asked Zhenga if she liked it, but the filly couldn't bring herself to verbally express her opinion.

For instead, the instincts of a runner burned inside her like the orange-colored flowers. She hardly glanced at the twins before taking off at a canter, letting out a gleeful whinny as she ran a couple yards away from them. She slid to a stop, throwing her weight back and rearing up onto her hind legs. She thrashed out with her hooves, the muscles in her hindquarters taut as she slowed her coming back to the ground to avoid hurting herself.

Zhenga's leg muscles coiled, preparing for her to take off again. Whipping around like a snake, she took off back toward the twins this time, knowing it wouldn't be safe to venture too far until she'd been accepted as a kingdom member. A couple feet away from the twins, Zhenga slowed her pace to a trot, before quickly folding in her knees and dropping to the ground, shifting her weight so she'd end up on her back.

The filly couldn't help it; she felt like a foal again, running free at her dam's side and just enjoying herself. With her legs folded in, the filly rolled on the grass, loving the feeling of the soft meadow against the fur on her back. It just felt so comfortable, not like the rougher grasses she sometimes rolled in back in Sylva. Of course, it depended on where you were in the kingdom, since Sylva had some nice rolling spots too.

But nothing like this, not at all. When she was done rolling, Zhenga remained laying on her side, letting out a peaceful sigh and glancing up at the other filly with them.

"Come on," she told Kylin, "this feels great."

    He tells her "ooh love".
Zhenga’s excitement to be shown around matched Kylin’s. Kharon seemed pretty eager too. Perhaps a little too, as he continues to ramble and ramble and ramble. Even as he walks he’s not silent. Kylin doesn’t hold it against him, finding it quite endearing to see him like that. Just, as long as he wouldn’t forget hér.

She doesn’t know most of the horses Kharon speaks about, it causes her to frown as she wonders about them. When had he met them? Why hadn’t she been there too? Anyway, that was for another time, not now, and Kylin hopes she won’t forget about it.

Upon reaching the little meadow a grin pulls up the corners of her lips and she gladly moves to Kharon’s side. Like twins they were always together, never really alone. Well, except for a very rare few times. Her lips touch his cheek lovingly, but she doesn’t follow as he walks further, ahead of both her and Zhenga before going down. Kylin cannot help it but to laugh at him, purple and white and orange and pink, a bright mess of colors.

Soon Zhenga joined her brother and Kylin can only watch with a small smile. ”It does” she agrees with Zhenga, lightly nodding her head before making her way over towards them. She doesn’t drop down to her knees though, instead she keeps standing and dips her head, lightly touching Kharon’s shoulder.

”I like being here” she tells them both, not really for a reason. ”Just watching, the sun peeking through the leaves, a soft breeze that moves the grass and the flowers, it’s just beautiful.” Kylin’s gaze travels over the little meadow, a small smile curling up the corners of her purple lips. She’s in another world, not really lost in thoughts, just silently enjoying the view.

"I agree, it is a rather pretty sight," Zhenga offered, her eyes following Kylin's gaze when she realized the purple filly was no longer looking at her twin and the roan. Though Zhenga had experienced a number of wonders of Ischia already, there was always so much to see that everything was still taking her by surprise. The small meadow the trio of youngsters were in was one of the most peaceful things that Zhenga had ever seen, and that was saying something since she came from a kingdom where the trees provided a feeling of sanctuary for those that felt lost.

Eager to get back on her hooves, Zhenga stretched out her front legs and hoisted her weight off the ground. Once she was up, the filly gave her body a vigorous shake to get rid of the dust and dirt marring her light roan colored coat. Her black points were littered with a thin layer of dust, but she couldn't really do anything about those unless she soaked them in a river or lake.

And even though there was probably a fresh water source here, since the rest of it came from the ocean, Zhenga doubted these horses would appreciate having their water source dirtied for the sake of one filly getting rid of some harmless dirt.

Though she wished to continue exploring the meadow, Zhenga was ready to get down to business. She didn't want to be here any longer than she had to, in the sense that she hadn't really been officially recruited yet. She didn't want to risk getting herself in trouble by being here without the leader's permission, and she didn't want the twins to get in trouble for bringing her here without the proper permission.

The roan filly turned to look at the purple paint twins, "I don't know about you two, but I'd rather not get in trouble. Who do I need to see about becoming an official kingdom resident? I feel like I'm here without permission right now and I don't want to risk it any longer," she explained, giving the twins a somewhat nervous look at the thought of getting in trouble.

let my eyes be the rhythm, let my mind be your freedom

Mmmm, the sun felt so good on his side. Even still, he managed to sit up to watch the girls talk back and forth a few moments, just resting quietly and listening to their voices as he cleaned some loose debris from his feathers. Zhenga's sounded like she could chase someone off with sharp words if she needed to. But he bet she could be so quiet and gentle too if she felt like it. Like Mother, he figured. Kylin's was so soft though.

Then his attention shifted as the red girl climbed to her feet, shaking herself free of dust and loose strands of grass. He listened to her thoughts without thinking about it, without really meaning to. It just always worked that way, came so naturally to him. She wanted to clean herself off, but was afraid to dirty the water, and he almost smiled. He rose to his feet too, nudging his twin sweetly though she was already standing.

"I don't know about you two, but I'd rather not get in trouble. Who do I need to see about becoming an official kingdom resident?"

He grinned wide and joined her at her side, laying his wing over Kylin and pulling her along with him as usual. He almost draped his other wing over Zhenga's back but remembered how she hadn't seemed to like that before, and so he hesitated, then carefully tucked it back in.

"That's alright. It's our family that rules this place now. We like you, and you like it here, so we can just tell our parents about you when we get home." He ventured a cautious but friendly tap at her shoulder. It was at least less than hugging her, but physical affection was so natural and it felt strange to hold himself back.

"Do you want to see anything else, or find yourself a nice spot to stay?" He hesitated a moment, then added as casually as he could, "There's a few natural springs dotted all over the island. They usually have constantly running fresh water that washes out to sea. Always fresh, tastes really good." And good for cleaning away the dirt she wanted gone from her coat without soiling any drinking pools.

Zhenga's eyes caught the colt draping a wing over his sister before trying to do the same to the roan filly. However, he seemed to remember what happened the last time he tried a show of affection such as that, for he tucked his wing back in after giving her a friendly tap on the shoulder instead. Zhenga didn't seem to mind that; it was less than a second of contact, and nowhere she didn't like, so she didn't give the colt the evil eye when he pulled away.

Kharon offered Zhenga the chance to go look around and find a place she'd like to use as a home for herself while living on the island when she wasn't around the other kingdom members. Hearing that, but mostly thinking about the opportunity she could use to explore, the roan filly nodded in excitement and turned her head to look at the colt.

"Sure! I'd love the chance to go find a place for myself! Just please be sure to tell your parents about me so that they don't chase me off the island," she added in a joking manner before giving the siblings a goodbye nod and heading off into the forest to explore and find a place to rest.

    He tells her "ooh love".
She smiles when Zhanga agrees with her, making her nod slightly and glances over towards the bay roan mare when she stands up. The sight makes her chuckle, flower dust coming off like Zhenga like she as a fairy who was busy spreading her magical dust around. ”Careful to not get the pollen in your face, it’s not a nice feeling” she warns Zhenga with a chuckle, grinning a little.

Oh, how much she had laughed when Ivar had plunged his nose into a flower and breathed in deeply. He had regret doing so very much. And just like then their meeting today, with Kharon and Zhenga, was peaceful and friendly and Kylin enjoyed it. She moved aside a little, giving her brother space to stand up, but naturally snuggles up his side as he drabs his wing across her back. Just the way she liked.

Though she didn’t get the chance to really enjoy it much longer. Kylin allows Kharon to answer, instead she brushes her muzzle across his neck to settle on his cheek to clear some of the flower dust off. ”Kharon is right” she mumbles, nodding her head as she glances across his back to Zhenga.

But it seemed like the bay roan mare had enough of their company. She jumped right in on Kharon’s suggestion that she maybe wanted to find a place for herself. Kylin stayed silent as Zhenga walks away, only lightly have nodded her head.

”Guess we should look for Father to tell him.”
