I wanna give you wild love, the kind that never slows down
I wanna take you high up let our hearts be the only sound
Magnus doesn’t know what he is doing until he is doing it.
He wakes early in the morning, when the sun has barely touched the corners of the Tephra sky, when the barest hints of gold and poppy streak across the horizon. Sleep does not come to him often, but he has been more restful in the past weeks and months than he can ever remember. Perhaps it is the sweetness that is curling by her side, burying his nose in the wild curls of her mane, feeling the faint heartbeat of their daughter within her belly. Perhaps it is the tranquility that comes from finding a home once more.
Whatever it is, he wakes refreshed, and he rises silently—quietly. He uncurls himself from her side, doing his best to leave her undisturbed although he cannot resist pressing the most brief of kisses to her poll. He wants to linger, wants to savor it, but instead he satisfies himself with studying her sleeping form, tracing the elegant angles of her curved neck, the sweet tilt of her lip, the swell of life in her belly.
When he turns from her, when he rocks back and then launches forward, he does it with a smile on his face. It has been a long time since he has made his way to the Mountain. The last time had been when the earth had swallowed the Gates and in an ironic twist of fate, he had made the journey side-by-side with his lover’s previous lover. Then, Offspring had been but a man with whom he’d made an uneasy alliance. Now, he knows just how much pain the other had carved into the heart that means the most to him.
But that is not what drives him forward today.
In fact, he thinks little of it.
Instead, he pushes himself up thin, twisting paths. He is agile as he works his way up the Mountain, not stopping to rest often. He is too full of hope, his chest swelling with it. He doesn’t stop until he makes his way to a flat space. He pulls himself upward and then pauses, his chest expanding as he draws in breath, as he feels the cold wind run down the length of his sweat-slicked neck. For several minutes, he stands like that, drawing in air and looking around him, eyes narrowing against the risen sun.
When he has steadied himself, he steps forward, his voice low but strong enough to carry forward to where the fae may hear him. “I do not come here often,” he starts, brow furrowing. “I really have only come here once before—to ask for home. You granted my wish then. You gave me Tephra and it has become more than I could have ever asked for, more than I could have dreamed the last time that I stood before you.” He dips his head a little. “For that, I thank you. With my entire heart. I thank you.”
Magnus draws in another breath, lifting his gaze a little. “I come again to ask for your favor. I-” his voice breaks a little and he clears his throat, taking a moment to gather his thoughts. “I have lost much in my lifetime,” he corrects himself, “lifetimes. I have lost parents, children, homes, loved ones. I have watched them die before me. I have watched them disappear. I have watched as so much has withered.”
His voice grows stronger.
“I have found something I never thought that I would again. I have found a home—and, perhaps even more impossible, I have found someone to love. Someone kind and good. More wonderful than I deserve. She carries my daughter within her now—it is more than I could ever ask for.” A soft laugh under his breath. “So perhaps it is greedy for me to ask for more, but I am. If you would hear me, I would ask to gift her immortality. Gift her eternal life.” Again, silence finds him and he frowns as he thinks, as the weight of the request sits across his shoulders. “I have never asked for abilities or gifts more than I was given at birth. I have never wanted to control the heavens or command the earth. I have never hungered for more power than the strength of my back, but I ask for this: please, I cannot lose her.”
I wanna go where the lights burn low and you're only mine
