"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura
Loess was nice, but Mary just wanted to explore. Mother and father were protective but she was able to convince them to let her go to the playground so long as she went with Delta. She barely knew him...she really only knew that they were related, but she didn't mind, so long as she got to play!
She pranced into the playground when they finally arrived. There was some foals here and there but none that looked friendly enough to talk to. She turns to the painted colt she came with Soooo, do you have other friends? She asks curious if she was missing something in Loess. Whats your mom like? She asks unsure why they don't share the same mother.
@[Delta] Sorry this is super short, I wrote it really fast before work. Just wanted to get them together!
He has grown considerably stronger over the first few months. Spending more and more time away from the side of his mother and more alongside his father. They spent many mornings patrolling the lands and evenings sparing. Preparation, he was always told. For exactly what, he was unsure.
Father gave him the duty to escort his sister on play dates and he took the work very seriously. She had come to him with the idea of traveling to find others their age. Her vibrant spirit was rather contagious and he rarely refused her proposals. She spoke of a playground and with a bid farewell to their parents, they were off. She bounded happily ahead of him, but only slightly. He watched their surrounding with hawk eyes while she babbled carefree.
Soooo, Do you have other friends?
Her question causes his brow to furrow and he hardly pauses, "I don't have time for friends, Mary." The reply may have caught her off guard but it was the truth. His days were busy with duties that he had no time for friends. He remains at a marching stride as yet again her curious mind pries at him.
What's your mom like?
This question causes a slight pause in his response. He knew who his mother was but something had always struck him as odd with them. Again his brow furrows before his reply, "She's kind. Generous." And under a whisper he adds, "Much different than me." It wasn't that he was unkind or selfish, but more reserved. His feelings direct and with purpose. The strict noose of duties was choking him and he can see it on her face, so he lightens the mood with a toss of his crown and high stepping gait of his forelimbs. Arching his neck and lunging forward, with his hunches driving him into a canter, he reached for his sister with his muzzle as he passed her...
They traveled together, she was much less aware of her surroundings. She could hear noises all around, but she did not pay much attention, luckily Delta was very much the opposite. He was very much on edge, prancing around like he was some sort of warrior. She refrained from rolling her eyes, he was her brother after all, instead she tried her best at ignoring the show he was putting on. Surely NO ONE would approach them if he continued prancing around like that.
She asked if he had any other friends simply to strike a conversation with him. They were siblings that is for sure, they shared the same father, but there mothers were different. Father explained vaguely there relation, and that basically meant they had to get along. It was an attempt to get closer to him, a small shred of emotion inside of Mary wanted to truly get to know her brother. I don't have time for friends he responded to her question and she could not help but laugh at his response. Delta! she teased If you don't have time for friends what are you doing here?! He was so serious, he really needed to relax a bit.
The conversation dwindled again, she attempted again to strike up the conversation, this time she asked about his mother. She did not really know Lepis, she seemed involved with the kingdom though. Her question seemed to spark some sort of emotion with Delta, after a moment of thinking he finally responded. Shes kind....generous She was glad to hear that. Thats good! she responded, a little bit of pep in her step she matched his silly stride. Although she caught small mumble under his breath that he was not like his mother, her head tilted in confusion. why is that? her brother was not evil, was he? Delta! you are kind, have you done something unkind? I will forgive you! She wanted to continue the conversation but he broke into a canter and reached out towards her as he passed her. She looked at him for a moment in shock, but she quickly pinned her ears and bolted after him. HEY! no cheating! She laughed as her little legs pounded into the ground, she tried her hardest to get passed him but she galloped right beside him.
His lengthening stride drove him farther from the in-depth conversation she was trying to strike. He would much rather forget the past, as he knows little about it. With each question comes more answers he does not find, and he'd rather not open that can of worms.
Her accusations of him slighting her go unanswered as splashed limbs stretch to propel him over the uneven grounds. His green eyes ever scanning for danger or harm. Noticing none, his head lowers slightly and hunches drive him onward. A grin may have crept up on his lips for a moment, seeing his sister still trailing, but it is lost as his view returns to what lie before him. An unexpected obstacle appears and he is just seconds from barely noticing it. With a quick jolt upwards he clears the lumber sprayed across the ground.
Landing on the other side, he quickly turns to shout a warning to his sibling, "Mary! Watch out!." Father would tan his hide if anything happened to his sister while out of the kingdom. Mouth agape, he waits for what is to come next...
He does not respond to her question, instead his pace quickens and with it so does she. Her legs pound into the ground with every stride, her lungs burned begging for her to slow, but she refused to lessen her pace. The ground was uneven, but she barely noticed with the speed she was at. He was in the lead but just barely, her eyes were on him, and not the ground.
She barely saw the dead log that lay covered by the earths ground, she only noticed when Delta leaped into the air to clear it. She only had two strides to process the log and with it she hears her brother scream out a warning, she leaped into the air, she just barely cleared it and on the way down she scraped her front right leg.
Delta came to a halt and with it so did she, the scrape was not to bad, a small amount of blood dripped down her leg. Her adrenaline was so high she did not even feel it, Wasn't that fun! her voice was filled with joy, her brother had finally relaxed from the tense colt he always plays. As she finds his gaze she notices his mouth dropped WHAT!? she yells questioning him, was a wolf about to attack?! She spun around quickly but saw nothing, she lowered her head to her leg as she began to feel a sting. A small chuckle escapes her maw as she turns to look back at Delta It doesn't even hurt! I'll tell father I lingered off, he won't be mad at you! She stepped beside her brother bumping her shoulder into his Come on! don't worry! He always did worry!
His eyes bug out of his eye sockets as he witnesses Mary soaring through the air. It is if time has slowed and he is watching a flash of his life over again, and again, and again. The clip replays and he is frozen for a moment...
Wasn't that fun!
The tone of her voice is pure thrill which snaps him from his daze, peridot eyes refocus and shift to find her. It is a small wound but the sight of it causes his stomach to tighten. She seems to hardly notice at first, but it is all he sees. Gathering himself, he rushes to her. Voice panicked, "Oh no! Mary! You are hurt!"
He feels his heart thrumming in his ears as he inspects the rest of her. She is quick to assure him that she is fine but he won't hear any of it. Worried, he presses his muzzle to the crook of her neck, "We need to go home... I told dad I wouldn't let anything happen to you." She offers him an out but he could not lie. Not to their father, most of all.
The sun was beginning to wane anyhow, so it was best they returned before something worse happened to his sister.
