    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

my heart is darker than these oceans -- ceara
    #11
like the sun swallowed up by the earth
Here they are - beneath the shadow of the volcano that is always watching - and are at an impasse. Not because of Ceara, but because of him. It is always because of him, any heartache or pain caused by the people around him is always because of his indecisiveness and his habit of overthinking. Even Tangerine, the mother of his children, almost didn’t happen because he was too focused on his past, on the heartbreak that resided (does it still linger?) in his chest.

He is a mess, and he wonders if Ceara now recognizes that stigma about him - he hopes he is no longer put on a pedestal in her eyes, no longer seen as some victorious king with stars in his eyes. He doesn’t have all the answers (oh, but he wish he did!) and oftentimes there are moments that he falters, feeling as if he is failing - failing Tephra, failing his people, failing Ceara. He thinks of Wound, and the moment of weakness he had with her, and how though the mare is a close friend he adores, he cannot help the guilt that crowds his mind as he awaits Tangerine’s return. It weighs heavy and leaves him confused, just as he is beside Ceara in this moment.

He knows that there is a side to him that not many have seen. The bay Overseer is a fierce protector, and he always has been. His family is his family, and he will not allow anything to happen to them. He wonders if she is ready to shy away from him since Karaugh’s release, since the fire shone within his normally cool blue gaze, flickering wildly with an intensity that rarely graces the sharp angles of his auburn face. Warrick himself is not surprised at his capabilities when it came to keeping Tephra safe - he would die for any of the people within the volcano’s ashes.

However, the hardness fades away when situations calm, and is replaced with the gentle-spirited stallion that is known throughout Beqanna. And when her muzzle brushes the slope of his broad shoulder, her ember-like gaze is met with the gentle blue she adores. She searches his face, as if an answer lies beneath the furrow of his brow, but when she finds nothing, she simply speaks his name in a soft voice, yet holds something that Warrick is not expecting - weakness.

    Levi.

Warrick forgets Ceara’s relation to Levi, and the stallion snorts softly at the mention of the large bay. His feathers ruffle as the bone stretches beneath them, flexing them slightly before pulling them close into his barrel. He isn’t sure if Ceara knows the history between him and her brother, and for a moment he debates telling her, but decides against it. The worry in her eyes is enough to leave that part out, not wanting to bring her something more to hold against Levi. “He followed orders, Ceara,” he tells her with a clearing of his throat, ears flicking back slightly, “Karaugh is not innocent. You do not know her like I have.” He almost bristles at the mention of the mare’s name, his mind flickering to Kolera and the look of devastation on her face. “She is cunning.” Warrick is not surprised that she was able to seduce the fire-wielding stallion, and used his guardianship to her benefit while she served her sentence.

“Do not worry for him.” Despite Warrick’s dissatisfaction with Levi wounding Tangerine, the Overseer cannot dismiss the fact that Levi is a soldier, and beneficial to Tephra.
