    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

Where, who knows.  Why, it is uncertain…

    Sign Up Entry-
    • Have your character discover the portal, be CREATIVE! (Who, what, when and where)
    • Your character enters the portal and SCENE!  End your post there. *Please post to this thread*
    • It is that simple.
    • No word limit for sign up
    • Due Thursday, April 25th at 11:59pm CDT

    The Deets:
Each character will be placed into one of two fairy tales and will have one task related to that fairytale, with three obstacles to overcome related to their respective tale.  You will be given two database trait options to choose from each chapter to help in your task and overcome the obstacle in each chapter(see example below)!  When you sign up, the order in which you reply will determine which portal you go down(even vs odd) and which fairytale you appear in.  You will not know which fairytale you will get beforehand.  As your character goes through the magical portal to enter the fairytale, they are stripped of ALL previous teg traits. (Anything in their teg, poof, gone!)

    Ex) Jack and the Beanstalk
          Task: Steal the golden goose
Chapter/Obstacle 1- The "Giants" pet tiger targets you
            Trait- fire breathing
Chapter/Obstacle 2- Retrieve key around sleeping "Giants" neck
            Trait- sound mimicry
Chapter/Obstacle 3- Unlock door and flee with golden goose
            Trait- wind manipulation

Your character will have to discover their new trait in some way during that respective chapter.
Ex.   New chapter trait- Fire breathing- your character sneezes from all the dust and flames shoot from their mouth.

Your chosen traits carry over into your next chapter to assist in your next obstacle.
    Ex.    Chpt/Obs 1: fire breathing
Chpt/Obs 2: fire breathing and sound mimicry
Chpt/Obs 3: fire breathing, sound mimicry and wind manipulation

**You only have to discover your new trait during the chapter you received it.  You do not have to use it to complete the obstacle, but what fun is having it if you don't use it!

    Rules-
    • Your character will have to discover their newest trait in some way during that respective chapter.
    • Players must have had one IC post in the last 60 days to enter the quest(this sign-up entry does NOT count).  Any character of the player can be entered.
    • Up to two entries per player
    • NO editing posts
    • NO use of previous existing teg traits during quest
    • NO extensions- To drop out, and not receive a defect, you must post IC saying, “There is no place like home” and click heels three times.  Your character will then be transported back to where they started with no memory of the event.
    • Defects can be given for not meeting deadlines or not following rules, but they will only be temporary (two RL weeks)
    • MOST IMPORTANT RULE: These will be judged on creativity, flow of your story, and following rules

*The new chapters will be posted on Friday mornings, and you have until the next Thursday before midnight(cdt) to reply. There will be 3 chapters total.
*There will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place space trait prizes (TBD).  There will also be smaller “participation” prizes.  These can be given to any of the players characters and will correlate with your story.

The magnificent black and purple spotted stallion takes a leisurely walk under the twinkling starlight, gazing up at the spectacular sight of the sparkling stars. Suddenly, a swift comet shoots across the sky, catching the stallion's attention. His ears perk up in excitement, and a small smile graces his face as he marvels at the rare and beautiful phenomenon. Filled with a sense of wonder, he closes his eyes and makes a wish upon the shooting star which lands before him.

As he opens his eyes, he sees a mysterious portal shimmering like the night sky. He can hardly believe his eyes, wondering if he's dreaming. Despite his uncertainty, he decides to take a closer look and steps into the portal. Suddenly, everything goes dark, and he finds himself in an unknown place, unsure of what lies ahead.

"I don't want my life to imitate art,
I want my life to be art."
    -Carrie Fisher

She lets the autumn currents dictate her flight path today, for she has no real destination in mind. In truth, she doesn’t actually know where to go. She has not strayed too far from the Gates (and thus has met precious few others) since her surprise landing just a couple of years ago. Though still young and reckless, she is still somewhat mindful of the directions she follows... she does not want to lose her way again, not so soon after returning to the Gates.

Though she prefers to fly much higher, to walk among the clouds as her name suggests, the air has too much of a bite, so she keeps to the lower altitudes. It’s really not a terrible thing, she decides, for she can see the details of the land and its inhabitants far more clearly. She sweeps over the terrain, admiring the way that the cheery colors of summer have given way to the vibrant yet earthy browns, reds, oranges, and yellows of the changing foliage.

But there is something else that doesn’t quite fit into the fall scenery beneath her.

All at once, a light winks into existence. Its center shimmers and dances in a delicate but hypnotic manner, erasing all other thoughts from her mind as its glow strengthens. Ever the curious child, she circles back and begins to descend from her lofty position. She touches down a fair distance from the light, cautious but enthusiastic at uncovering a potentially magical piece of Beqanna.

Now that she is closer, she finds that she cannot see anything within the brightness, and upon further inspection, she can easily walk around it. If that weren’t enough to capture her attention, she can feel the tendrils of magic that stretch towards her from the pulsating light. She had told Myrna that she had been looking for some unknown thing while she’d been away from the Gates, but that she had come up empty-handed; maybe this will somehow help satiate the hunger that has been causing her to wander.

Wariness cast aside by a rushing swell of excitement, she gives in to the pull of magic and steps forward, allowing the swirling, glittering vortex of light to wash over the entirety of her dark body…

The tides of time have been surprisingly kind to Sapere. Truly, it can only be explained by the magic of Beqanna for he is now a man out of place, secreted away from the decades that have passed and now introduced anew.

The world he emerges into is oddly familiar and wholly different, as if his former experience had been nothing but a dream and he is now faced with the hard reality of waking from it. Seafoam edges around his hooves and ocean spray tickles along the copper-gold coat he bears as he wanders the edges of a foreign beach. This one is not white, not blinding and beautiful with tragic morose like the coast where death resides. These sands are dark, muddied somehow by wars long past. Wars he had thankfully been removed from, kept safe and silent far from the disasters and conflicts that plagued the world while his consciousness slept.

Now, he breathes deeply of the salty air. It is thick and feels heavy in his lungs as if attempting to burden him with some kind of guilt or remorse. Opposite the waves (whose crashing seems almost muted somehow, gentle shushes against plugged ears) stand strange twists of near-unnatural stone formations. During his meandering walk, torpid and nearly solemn with the weight of the gray sky overhead, Sapere observes them with muffled curiosity.

They would make interesting companions on this languid stroll.

He steps near to one, nostrils flared with a soft exhale as he reaches his nose toward it. A tickle of magic stirs like static at the back of his throat, mingling with his next sigh as a breath of life. The blocky column at his shoulder stirs, trembling and twisting for a moment before tilting slightly and sliding gently forward. As Sapere moves, more columns join him, marching with a muted rumble through earth and sand as he wanders the ruins.

A voiceless army for a nearly voiceless king.

Except, of course, he is not a king anymore. It’s what he’d been born to be, all he’d ever been taught, but he had quietly abdicated that throne many years ago.

And now it no longer exists.

He is not aware of that yet, though, just as he is not aware of a great many things. For now he feels almost boyish again, playing with his toy soldiers.

This march is soon interrupted though. Before him, beneath the broken arms of a crumbling arch, a shimmer of nearly corporeal magic glimmers and swirls. It is not obvious outright; it looks more like a heatwave from the deserts he had once called home, had called his own.

There is no warmth here, though. The chill is resolute and stationary – only he and the ocean and his medley of stone sentinels move in this disquieting place.

Pausing, Sapere studies the rippling portal, offering it little more than an emotionless appraisal before he moves toward it. Ears perked, head slightly lowered, he steps through the arch with barely a second thought.

Behind him, on the beach, the columns all cease their motion as his magic abruptly leaves them.

Only one had followed closely enough to tumble through the portal with him.

It collapses unceremoniously behind him, bereft of the animation he’d provided it.

Gnarled branches knit a familiar canopy overhead as the indigo colt wanders the depths of the forest. The shadows here suit him, folding him away from prying eyes. It’s where he’s felt safest for the whole of his life; the gloom is a comfort to him. These shadows, different from the blue-tinted light of nightfall, touched upon him with a secrecy that daylight could not offer.

Sophist had been born under the moon, full and bright and mystical as it transformed his infant form into a hideous sight. Limbs of bone with tattered violet flesh clinging to them, a skeleton dressed in bruise-colored bits of skin. Perhaps that is why he’d been abandoned – his mother, having seen that he had inherited her curse, had somehow presumed him better off alone.

    And alone he has remained.

    Alone, he festered.

Alone, his heart grew bitter, folding upon itself and shutting away any potential for hope.

He does not romp and roam as others his age might; he does not seek out companionship. He prefers it here where the trees and quiet creeks are all that speak to him. He enjoys the solitude, having assured himself that the typical social intercourse he often observes from the treeline is simply not for him.

As any child convinced that they are entirely correct in their assumptions, he has remained isolated.

Thus he has grown rather familiar with the veritable mazes of the forest. Kindred spirits could be found in the twists of knotted trees, the silver-flicked eyes of scurrying creatures who, like him, desired secrecy. He likes to think he has become one of them, forgotten in this place.

Much as he believes he knows the paths of the forest, he is very much mistaken. He learns as much quite quickly as he wanders today. Certain that he is bound for one of the wider freshwater streams, he finds himself somewhere else entirely.

He had only just stepped forward, pale hooves bringing him readily toward the promise of water, when an overwhelming sensation of having walked through a massive spiderweb overtakes him. He sputters, coughs vaguely, and tosses his head in an attempt to dislodge the offensive feeling, only to open his bright eyes upon unknown surroundings.

The forest had betrayed him to some new and foreign reality worthy of an indignant snort and stamp of his foot.
