    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

Exploring the world beyond his homeland has little appeal for dark-haired Malik. He has what he needs in Hyaline, and the common lands for entertainment on those rare days when he feels the desire to roam. But roam farther? See the parrots of Ischia with his own eyes? He’d rather hear tales of them from others, and focus instead on his quest.

His quest, he reminds himself. He only needs the feathers.

Bolder leaps up at Malik’s cry, revealing himself from the long grasses that had concealed his chestnut body. The raptor shrieks, eyes widening, and chooses escape through the woods rather than doubling back across the wide meadow. Bolder has cut off the high summer grasses through which she might escape, and her feathers flare out in fear as she leaps across a fallen log and continues to run, angling her path toward the deepest part of the woods.

Malik charges after her, his long dark limbs covering the ground between them. The space between them grows shorter, though they must dodge and weave and duck through the trees. How far they run he is not sure, but the trees have begun to grow denser, and even through his thick fur he can feel the steadily dropping temperatures as they run toward the center of the Forest. He ignores the shiver of apprehension that runs down his spine, choosing instead to focus on a leap forward.

His teeth snap shut on the dinosaur’s tail, and he feels the glide of feathers in his mouth. Growling, he shakes his head, and digs his feet into the earth.

He hears his mother’s words, the reminder to not waste a life, and it doesn’t grate as much as it once had. He could bring down this lizard-bird thing. He could, but there’s no need to - he’s not hungry and it’s not absolutely necessary. He already has the feathers, and he finally begins to understand what she’s been trying to teach him since her rebirth.

Malik lets go of the tail, his red tongue lolling from between moon white teeth and he turns his lupine head toward Bolder with a victorious grin. The young dinosaur continues to run toward the heart of the forest, never looking back.
